Caring for Wilsonville patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for WilsonvilleThird molars, considered carefully
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in without problems, while others are impacted, meaning they are trapped under the gum or bone or come in at an angle. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, decay in neighbouring teeth or cysts. The decision to remove them depends on X-rays, symptoms and future risk.
Teens and adults from Wilsonville can have wisdom teeth evaluated at our Port Dover office. If removal is recommended, ask about sedation options and whether you will need someone to drive you home. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.

Assessment
Pain at the back of the mouth, swollen or tender gums around a partially erupted tooth, bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth and repeated infections are common signs of wisdom tooth problems. X-rays show the position of the teeth, their roots and nearby nerves and sinuses.
Some wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy and cleanable may be monitored. Others are recommended for removal because of current problems or a high risk of future issues. The dentist will explain the reasons and discuss timing.
Preparation
Share your full medical history, medications and allergies. Blood thinners, certain bone medications and medical conditions can affect the procedure. Follow any instructions about eating and drinking before sedation. Do not stop prescribed medications without guidance.
Arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation is used. Stock up on soft foods, ice packs and recommended pain relief. Plan a few days of rest. Wear comfortable clothing and remove jewellery and contact lenses if advised.
The procedure
Local anaesthetic numbs the area. Sedation may be offered to help you relax. The dentist will explain the options and what you will feel. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Signal if you need more anaesthetic.
Erupted wisdom teeth may be removed like other teeth. Impacted teeth may require a small incision, removal of some bone and sectioning the tooth. Stitches may be placed. The procedure length depends on the number and position of teeth.
Recovery
Bite on gauze to control bleeding. Use ice packs to reduce swelling. Eat soft, cool foods and avoid straws, smoking and spitting, which can dislodge the clot. Take medications as directed. Gentle saltwater rinses may be recommended after the first day.
Call the office if bleeding persists, pain increases after a few days, swelling worsens or you develop a fever. Numbness that lasts beyond the expected time should also be reported. Keep follow-up appointments to check healing.
Planning your appointment
Book an assessment at our Port Dover office to have your wisdom teeth evaluated. If removal is recommended, ask about sedation and arrange a driver before the procedure day.
Bring a list of medications and any previous X-rays, and let the team know about medical conditions or a history of slow healing.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that can be cleaned may be kept and monitored. Removal is recommended when problems exist or are likely.
Removal is often easier in young adults, when roots are less developed. The dentist will recommend timing based on X-rays and symptoms.
Many people feel better within a few days, though complete healing takes longer. Impacted teeth may require more recovery time.
Local anaesthetic is used, and sedation may be offered. Some complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon who can provide deeper sedation.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost, exposing bone and causing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if this happens.
When a tooth cannot be saved, a careful extraction may be the best step. Wilsonville patients can learn about preparation and healing at our Port Dover office.
Some painful, infected or broken teeth need prompt removal. Wilsonville patients can learn how urgent extractions are assessed and planned at our Port Dover office.
