Port Dover Family Dentistry
Earlier wisdom-tooth images may help with assessment. Before a visit from Waterford, ask about transferring records and whether they answer today's questions.

Wisdom-tooth consultations begin at our Port Dover office; the treatment setting depends on assessment
All dental services for WaterfordAsk why removal is being considered
A wisdom tooth may be discussed because of recurring soreness, difficulty cleaning, decay or its position. It may also appear on an image even though you have no symptoms. Those situations do not all lead to the same decision. The recommendation should explain what the examination shows and why removal or monitoring is appropriate.
Waterford residents can contact our Port Dover practice about a current concern or a previous recommendation. Tell the team about pain, swelling and any episodes that have already been treated. The consultation can clarify the next investigation, the suitable provider and the practical arrangements if extraction is advised.

Review the tooth and its surroundings
The dentist examines the area and considers imaging needed to understand the tooth and nearby structures. Explain repeated gum irritation, food trapping or changes in opening. If records were taken elsewhere, ask how they can be shared; the clinician will decide whether they answer the current assessment questions.
Ask which tooth is affected and whether the concern also involves a neighbouring tooth or surrounding tissue. If the term impacted is used, have the dentist explain how the position relates to the specific finding. The description of eruption alone does not provide the complete reason for removal or monitoring in your case.
Compare removal with monitoring
Healthy, functional wisdom teeth do not automatically need extraction. When removal is advised, ask what problem it addresses and what might happen if the tooth remains. If monitoring is appropriate, clarify how the area will be kept clean and what examinations or reviews are recommended.
Discuss risks relevant to the assessed position, nearby structures and your health, and ask whether specialist input would help. Consider each recommended extraction within that explanation. A general expectation of removing all four wisdom teeth is not enough to account for differences in condition, position or the options appropriate to individual teeth.
Confirm the provider and preparation
Ask whether the assessed procedure is suitable for this office or needs referral because of its complexity or your care requirements. Confirm the treating provider and location before arranging attendance. Discuss pain control and any proposed sedation with that team rather than assuming the consultation has already established a particular method or procedure date.
Share medicines, allergies and relevant conditions before treatment is scheduled. Follow the treating provider's preparation instructions, including food, medicines, accompaniment and transport where applicable. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or copy another person's preparation routine without clinical direction.
Prepare for recovery and review
Explain work, exercise and caregiving commitments when requesting aftercare guidance for eating, cleaning, activity and medicines. Plan time and help around the procedure-specific advice rather than another person's recovery experience. Before leaving, identify who handles questions and what any scheduled review is intended to check.
Report bleeding that is not settling as directed, worsening pain, swelling, fever or altered sensation to the treating provider. Uncontrolled bleeding, trouble breathing or swallowing, or rapidly spreading swelling requires emergency medical attention. Do not wait for a planned review when a concerning recovery change needs earlier assessment.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover team with your symptoms or the advice received elsewhere. Ask which images and records are useful and whether the booking is for assessment before any extraction date is arranged.
If referral is recommended, confirm how it will be sent and what to do while awaiting that appointment. Review fees, the proposed procedure and recovery arrangements with the provider who will deliver the care.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The decision depends on health, position and the wider examination rather than symptoms alone. Some teeth can remain with appropriate care and monitoring. Ask the dentist to explain the findings supporting either removal or review and what changes should prompt reassessment.
Confirm the purpose of the booking. Assessment may be needed before a procedure, provider and comfort plan can be chosen. A treatment appointment or specialist consultation may follow separately, especially when further information or preparation is required.
Tooth position, procedure complexity or individual health and comfort requirements can affect the appropriate setting. Ask what the referral is intended to provide and how records will be transferred. A referral helps match the care to the assessed needs of the case.
Tell the team when and where they were taken and ask about an authorized transfer. The clinician will consider whether they are suitable for the current question. Existing images may be useful, but they do not automatically replace every investigation needed for planning.
Contact the treating or referring provider and describe the change, particularly swelling, fever or difficulty functioning. Do not assume the scheduled date is still the appropriate timing. Emergency medical symptoms require immediate help rather than waiting for a dental office response.
Want another opinion before tooth removal? Waterford patients can ask which records are needed and whether waiting for review is reasonable for the assessed tooth.
Repeatedly cancelling dental visits because of anxiety? Contact our team from Waterford to explain what prevents attendance and discuss a realistic next appointment.
