Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually appear in the late teens or twenties. Some come in fully and cause no trouble. Others are impacted, meaning they are trapped in the jaw or gums, or come in at an angle. These can cause pain, infection, decay in neighbouring teeth or cysts. Not every wisdom tooth needs removal, so assessment matters.
Walsingham patients with wisdom tooth pain, or teens and young adults wanting to know if theirs should be removed, can be assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review X-rays, explain the findings and discuss whether removal is advisable, can be done in the office or would be better handled by an oral surgeon.

Should they come out?
Wisdom teeth may be removed if they cause repeated gum infections, pain, decay, damage to the tooth in front or cysts. Teeth that are partially erupted can trap food and bacteria, leading to inflammation. Crowding or difficulty cleaning may also be reasons. The dentist will explain the specific findings for your teeth.
Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy, functional and easy to clean may be kept. Some impacted teeth that cause no problems can be monitored with periodic X-rays. The dentist will weigh the risks of keeping them against the risks of removal, considering your age and health.
Assessment
A panoramic X-ray shows the position of wisdom teeth, their roots and their relationship to nerves and sinuses. In some cases, 3D imaging may be recommended. The dentist also examines the gums and surrounding teeth for signs of infection or damage.
Share your full medical history and medications. The dentist will discuss whether removal can be done in the office or whether referral to an oral surgeon is better, especially for deeply impacted teeth or teeth close to nerves. Sedation options may also be discussed.
The procedure
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, and sedation may be offered in some cases. For erupted wisdom teeth, removal may be similar to a regular extraction. You will feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Gauze is placed to control bleeding.
Impacted teeth may require a small incision in the gum, removal of some bone or dividing the tooth into sections. Stitches may be placed. The dentist will explain what to expect beforehand. If sedation is used, arrange for someone to drive you home.
Recovery
Swelling, mild bleeding and discomfort are normal for the first few days. Use ice packs on the face, take pain relief as directed and eat soft foods. Avoid smoking, straws, spitting and vigorous rinsing for the recommended time to protect the blood clot. Rest for the remainder of the day.
Contact the office if bleeding does not slow, pain increases after a few days, you develop fever or a bad taste, or swelling worsens. These may signal dry socket or infection. Numbness that persists after the anaesthetic should wear off should also be reported.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham patients can call our Port Dover office to arrange a wisdom teeth assessment. Mention any pain, swelling or difficulty opening your mouth so the team can advise on urgency.
Bring any recent X-rays, a list of medications and arrange a ride home if sedation is being considered for removal.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, functional wisdom teeth that are easy to clean may be kept. The dentist will assess each tooth and recommend removal only when there is a good reason.
Removal is often easier in younger adults, when roots are less developed. The timing depends on the position of the teeth and any problems they are causing.
Many people feel better within a few days to a week, though complete healing takes longer. Recovery depends on the complexity of the extraction.
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. Sedation may be available in some cases. General anaesthesia is usually provided by an oral surgeon if needed.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost early, exposing bone and causing increased pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office for treatment.
Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved. Walsingham patients can learn why extractions are recommended, how removal is done in Port Dover and what healing and replacement involve.
When a tooth is badly broken or infected, urgent removal is sometimes the best option. Walsingham patients can learn how the decision is made and how to heal well afterwards.
