Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaAssess before removing
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in without problems, while others are impacted, partially erupted or positioned in ways that cause pain, infection, decay or damage to neighbouring teeth. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out, so an assessment helps decide whether removal or monitoring is the better approach.
Villa Nova patients with wisdom tooth concerns can have them evaluated at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain the findings and whether extraction here or referral to an oral surgeon is recommended.

Signs of trouble
Pain at the back of the jaw, swollen or tender gums, a bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth or recurring infections around a partially erupted tooth are common reasons to have wisdom teeth checked. Swelling that spreads or affects breathing or swallowing needs emergency care.
Some problems are only seen on X-rays, such as decay on the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front of it, cysts or bone loss. Impacted teeth may sit at an angle pressing against neighbouring teeth. The dentist will explain what the images show.
Deciding
Removal is often recommended when wisdom teeth cause repeated infections, damage neighbouring teeth, have untreatable decay or are associated with cysts. The dentist will explain the reasons and the potential risks of removal, such as nerve proximity for lower teeth.
Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy, functional and easy to clean may not need removal. Some impacted teeth that cause no problems may be monitored with periodic X-rays. Ask the dentist about the pros and cons of each approach.
The procedure
Share your full medical history and medications. Follow any instructions about eating and medications beforehand. If sedation is used, arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you. Prepare soft foods and plan time to rest afterward.
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, and sedation may be offered. Erupted teeth may be removed simply, while impacted teeth may require an incision and sectioning. Stitches may be placed. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.
Recovery
Swelling and discomfort are common for a few days. Use cold compresses, take pain relief as directed and eat soft foods. Avoid smoking, straws, spitting and vigorous rinsing for the first day to protect the blood clot. Follow your written aftercare instructions.
Contact the office if bleeding does not stop with pressure, pain increases after a few days, swelling worsens or fever develops. These may indicate dry socket or infection. Seek emergency care if swelling affects breathing or swallowing.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment of your wisdom teeth. Mention any pain, swelling or recurring infection so the team can advise on timing.
If sedation is planned, arrange a driver for the trip home to Villa Nova and someone to stay with you afterward.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, functional wisdom teeth that are easy to clean may be kept. The dentist will assess each one and explain the recommendation.
Local anaesthetic numbs the area during the procedure. Some discomfort and swelling afterward are common and usually manageable.
Many people feel better within a few days to a week, though complete healing takes longer. Follow aftercare instructions closely.
Complex or deeply impacted teeth may be referred. The dentist will explain if a referral is recommended.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost early, exposing bone. It can be very painful. Avoid smoking and straws to reduce the risk.
Removing a tooth is a careful choice, not a first resort. Villa Nova patients can read why removal may be suggested and how early healing is protected.
When a painful or infected tooth cannot be saved, urgent removal may be advised. Villa Nova patients can learn about assessment, safety and healing.
