Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office

Wisdom teeth usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in fully and cause no trouble. Others are partly erupted, impacted in bone, or angled toward neighbouring teeth, which can lead to pain, infection, decay or gum problems. The dentist evaluates each tooth individually to decide whether removal is advisable.
Turkey Point patients, including students home for the summer, can have wisdom teeth assessed at our Port Dover office. If removal is recommended, the team can discuss timing so recovery does not clash with important plans.

Assessing the teeth
Pain or swelling at the back of the mouth, a bad taste, gum tenderness around a partly erupted tooth, or difficulty opening the jaw can indicate problems. Food trapped behind the last molar can cause decay in neighbouring teeth. Some problems develop silently, which is why X-rays are important.
A panoramic X-ray or other imaging shows the position of wisdom teeth, their roots and nearby nerves. The dentist looks at whether teeth are impacted, how they are angled and whether there is room for them. If teeth are healthy and functional, monitoring may be advised instead of removal.
Planning surgery
The dentist explains which teeth should be removed and why, the anaesthesia or sedation options and possible risks such as dry socket, swelling and, rarely, nerve effects. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon. Share your full medical history and medications, and ask any questions before agreeing.
If sedation is planned, arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you. Follow eating and drinking instructions. Prepare soft foods and ice packs at home. Plan a few quiet days afterward rather than scheduling beach days, boating or sports right after surgery.
The procedure
The area is numbed, and sedation may be used if planned. For impacted teeth, a small opening in the gum may be needed, and the tooth may be removed in sections. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Let the team know if you do.
Gauze is placed to control bleeding, and stitches may be used. You will receive written instructions covering pain relief, swelling, diet and cleaning. Make sure you understand them and know how to contact the office if a problem arises after hours.
Recovery
Swelling and discomfort typically peak around the second or third day. Use cold compresses, take pain relief as directed and keep your head elevated. Eat soft, cool foods and avoid straws, spitting and smoking, which can dislodge the clot. Gentle salt-water rinses may be advised after the first day.
Contact the office if pain increases after a few days, bleeding persists, swelling worsens, you develop fever or you notice lasting numbness. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or swallowing. Attend any follow-up appointment so the dentist can confirm healing is on track.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an exam and X-rays for your wisdom teeth. Mention any pain or swelling and whether you have upcoming travel or events to plan around.
Bring any previous X-rays showing your wisdom teeth. If sedation may be needed, ask about preparation and transportation requirements.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that can be cleaned may be kept and monitored. The dentist decides based on X-rays and symptoms.
Removal is often easier in younger adults because roots are less developed, but timing depends on individual circumstances.
Discomfort varies but is usually manageable with recommended pain relief. Swelling often peaks after a couple of days and then improves.
Options range from local anaesthetic to sedation. Deeper anaesthesia may be offered by an oral surgeon. The dentist will discuss what suits you.
Many people return to light activities within a few days. Avoid strenuous exercise and swimming until the dentist advises it is safe.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal may be the safest option. Turkey Point patients can learn about assessment, the procedure and healing at our Port Dover office.
When a tooth is badly broken or infected, urgent removal may be advised. Turkey Point patients can learn how the decision is made and what recovery involves.
