Wisdom teeth, the third molars, usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in fully and cause no trouble. Others are impacted, partly erupted or growing at an angle, which can lead to pain, infection, gum problems or damage to neighbouring teeth. The decision to remove them depends on their position, symptoms and future risk.
Pine Grove patients concerned about wisdom teeth can be assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review X-rays, discuss your symptoms and explain whether removal is recommended now, later or not at all.

Do they need removal
Repeated gum infections around a partly erupted tooth, pain, decay that cannot be easily treated, damage to the neighbouring molar, cysts and crowding concerns are common reasons for removal. Food trapping and difficulty cleaning can also lead to problems. The dentist will explain which issues apply to your teeth.
Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy, properly positioned and easy to clean may be kept. Some impacted teeth cause no problems and may simply be monitored with periodic X-rays. The dentist will discuss the risks of keeping versus removing them so you can make an informed choice.
Planning
A panoramic X-ray shows the position of wisdom teeth, their roots and their relationship to nerves and sinuses. Sometimes 3D imaging is recommended. These images help the dentist judge how complex removal would be, whether risks are higher and which approach is safest for you.
Simpler extractions may be done at the office, while complex impactions, close proximity to nerves or a preference for deeper sedation may lead to referral to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain the reasons and what to expect so you can plan time off and arrange support.
The procedure
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, and sedation may be offered depending on the complexity and setting. Follow any fasting or medication instructions. Arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation is used. Eat a light meal beforehand if allowed, and wear comfortable clothing.
For erupted teeth, removal may be similar to a standard extraction. Impacted teeth may require a small incision in the gum, removal of some bone or dividing the tooth into sections. Stitches may be placed. You will feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Gauze is placed to control bleeding.
Recovery
Bite on gauze as directed, rest and keep your head elevated. Use cold compresses on the cheeks to reduce swelling in the first day. Avoid spitting, straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing. Eat soft, cool foods and take pain relief as advised. Gentle salt-water rinses often start the next day.
Swelling and soreness usually peak around the second or third day. Call the office if bleeding does not slow, pain worsens after a few days, a bad taste develops, or you have fever or numbness that does not improve. Seek emergency care for breathing or swallowing difficulties.
Planning your appointment
Book an examination at our Port Dover office to have your wisdom teeth checked. The dentist will review X-rays and explain whether removal or monitoring is the best plan.
Bring a full medication list and any recent X-rays. If sedation may be used, arrange a driver and confirm preparation instructions in advance.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, well-positioned wisdom teeth that can be cleaned may be kept. Removal is recommended when they cause problems or are likely to. The dentist will advise based on your X-rays and symptoms.
Many people feel much better within a few days to a week, though full healing takes longer. Complex removals may need more recovery time. Following aftercare instructions helps.
Removal is often easier in late teens or early twenties when roots are not fully formed. However, the decision depends on individual factors, not age alone.
Local anaesthetic is always used. Sedation may be offered depending on complexity and setting. Some patients are referred to an oral surgeon for deeper sedation if appropriate.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost, exposing bone and causing pain. Avoid smoking, straws and spitting for several days. Call the office if pain worsens after a few days.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal may be the safest step. Pine Grove patients can read how extractions are planned, carried out and healed afterward.
When an infected, broken or very painful tooth cannot be saved, urgent removal may help. Pine Grove patients can learn how the decision is made and how to heal.
