Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually emerge in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in without problems, while others become impacted, grow at an angle or only partly break through the gum. These situations can lead to pain, infection, decay, crowding or damage to neighbouring teeth, and removal may be recommended.
Peacock Point patients can have their wisdom teeth assessed at our Port Dover office. If removal is recommended, plan for a few days of recovery, especially if you are heading back to the cottage or have summer plans soon after.

Assessment
Pain at the back of the mouth, swollen or tender gums, a bad taste, difficulty opening the jaw and repeated infections around a partly erupted tooth are common signs. X-rays show the position of wisdom teeth, their roots and their relationship to nerves and neighbouring teeth.
Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy, positioned correctly and easy to clean may not need removal. The dentist may recommend monitoring with periodic X-rays. The decision depends on your symptoms, the tooth’s position and the risk of future problems.
Preparing
Share your full medical history and medications, including blood thinners and supplements. Ask whether the extraction will be done at the office or through referral to an oral surgeon. Discuss anaesthesia and sedation options and follow any instructions about eating and drinking beforehand.
Arrange for a driver if sedation is used. Plan to rest for a few days. Stock up on soft foods, cold packs and recommended pain relief. If you have summer activities planned, such as swimming or boating, ask when it is safe to resume them.
The procedure
The area is numbed, and sedation may be used. For erupted teeth, removal may be straightforward. Impacted teeth may require a small incision and dividing the tooth into sections. You should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Stitches may be placed to help the gum heal.
Gauze is placed to control bleeding. You will receive written aftercare instructions. Ask about pain management, signs of complications and when to follow up. Rest with your head elevated and apply cold packs to reduce swelling.
Recovery
Swelling, bruising and discomfort are common and usually peak within the first few days. Eat soft foods, stay hydrated and avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing to protect the blood clot. Gentle salt water rinses may be recommended after the first day.
Contact the office if bleeding continues, swelling worsens after a few days, fever develops, pain increases or you notice a bad taste or smell. These may signal infection or dry socket. Numbness that persists beyond the expected time should also be reported.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a wisdom teeth assessment. Mention any pain, swelling or infection and let the team know about upcoming plans that may affect recovery.
Bring recent X-rays if available and a full medication list, and arrange a driver if sedation is planned.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, well-positioned wisdom teeth that can be cleaned properly may be kept and monitored. Removal is recommended when they cause problems or are likely to cause them in the future.
Most people feel better within several days, though full healing takes longer. Recovery depends on the complexity of the extraction. Follow aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of complications.
Options range from local anaesthetic to sedation, depending on the complexity and your preferences. The dentist or surgeon will discuss what is appropriate and available for your situation.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the extraction site, exposing bone and causing significant pain. Avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing. Contact the office if pain worsens after a few days.
Avoid strenuous activity for a few days. Ask the dentist when it is safe to swim or resume water activities, as this depends on your healing and the complexity of the extraction.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal may be the safest step. Peacock Point patients can learn about extraction, healing and replacement planning in Port Dover.
