Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsThird molars, considered
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in fully and cause no trouble. Others are impacted, meaning they are trapped beneath the gum or bone, or come in at an angle. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infection, damage to neighbouring teeth or cysts.
Lynedoch patients with discomfort at the back of the mouth, or who have been told their wisdom teeth may need attention, can arrange an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review X-rays, explain whether removal is advisable and discuss whether treatment would be done in the office or through referral.

Assessment
Pain, swelling or tenderness at the back of the jaw, bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth and repeated gum infections around a partially erupted tooth are common signs of wisdom tooth problems. Some impacted teeth cause no symptoms but may still pose risks to neighbouring teeth.
A panoramic X-ray or other imaging shows the position of wisdom teeth, their roots and their relationship to nearby nerves and sinuses. The dentist will explain whether the teeth are likely to cause problems and whether removal or monitoring is the better choice.
Planning
Some wisdom teeth can be removed in the dental office, while complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain the reasons for any referral. Ask about sedation options and what is involved so you can make an informed choice.
Follow instructions about eating and medications before the procedure. If sedation is planned, arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you. Prepare soft foods, ice packs and any recommended pain relief in advance so you can rest comfortably afterward.
The procedure
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, and sedation may be used if planned. For impacted teeth, a small incision may be made in the gum, and the tooth may be divided into pieces to remove it more easily. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain.
After removal, the area is cleaned and stitches may be placed. Gauze is positioned to control bleeding. You will receive detailed aftercare instructions before leaving. Ask any questions about recovery while you are still at the office.
Recovery
Swelling, bruising and soreness are common for a few days. Use ice packs, keep your head elevated and take pain relief as directed. Eat soft foods and avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the first day. Gentle salt-water rinses may be recommended afterward.
Contact the office if bleeding does not slow, pain worsens after several days, fever develops or you notice a bad taste or smell. These may indicate infection or a dry socket. Difficulty breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical care immediately.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange a wisdom tooth assessment. Mention pain, swelling or difficulty opening so the team can discuss how soon you should be seen.
If you have previous X-rays of your wisdom teeth, ask about having them sent ahead to help with planning.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy and easy to clean may not need removal. The dentist will assess each tooth and recommend removal only when there is a clear reason.
It depends on the complexity and your preferences. Local anaesthetic is used, and sedation or general anaesthesia may be options, sometimes through referral. Discuss choices with the dentist.
Most people feel better within a few days to a week, though healing continues for longer. Recovery varies depending on how complex the extraction was.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the extraction site, exposing bone. It causes increasing pain a few days later. Contact the office if this happens.
Removal is often easier in younger adults because roots are not fully formed and bone is less dense. The dentist will advise based on your X-rays and symptoms.
When a tooth cannot be saved, a careful extraction may be advised. Lynedoch patients can learn about assessment, the procedure and healing at our Port Dover office.
When an infected or broken tooth cannot be saved, urgent removal may be advised. Lynedoch patients can learn how emergency extractions are assessed in Port Dover.
