Wisdom teeth, the third molars, usually appear in the late teens or twenties. Some come in fully and cause no problems. Others are impacted, partially erupted or angled, which can lead to pain, swelling, infection, decay of neighbouring teeth or cysts. Removal is recommended when problems are present or likely, while healthy, well-positioned wisdom teeth may simply be monitored.
Long Point patients with wisdom tooth discomfort or questions can arrange an assessment at our Port Dover office. Some complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.

Assessment
Pain at the back of the mouth, swollen or bleeding gums around a partially erupted tooth, bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth or food trapping are common signs of wisdom tooth problems. Recurrent infections, called pericoronitis, are a frequent reason for removal.
A panoramic X-ray shows the position of wisdom teeth, their roots and nearby nerves and sinuses. The dentist considers your age, symptoms, how the teeth are positioned and whether they are affecting neighbouring teeth. You will hear whether removal is recommended now, later or not at all.
Planning
Share your medical history and medications. Deeply impacted teeth or those close to nerves may be referred to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain where the procedure will take place, what type of freezing or sedation is planned and what to expect during recovery.
Arrange a ride if sedation is used. Stock soft foods, ice packs and any recommended pain relief. Plan a few days of rest, avoiding strenuous activity. If you are staying at a cottage, make sure you have what you need on hand before the appointment.
The procedure
The area is numbed so you feel pressure but not sharp pain. For erupted teeth, removal may be straightforward. Impacted teeth may require a small incision, removal of some bone or sectioning the tooth. The dentist or surgeon will explain the steps in advance.
Once the tooth is removed, the site is cleaned and stitches may be placed. Gauze is applied to control bleeding. You will receive written aftercare instructions and be monitored briefly before going home, particularly if sedation was used.
Recovery
Swelling and discomfort typically peak over the first couple of days. Use ice packs on the outside of the face, take pain relief as directed and eat soft foods. Avoid straws, smoking, spitting and vigorous rinsing as instructed to protect the blood clot.
Contact the office if bleeding does not slow, swelling worsens after a few days, pain increases or you develop fever. Increasing pain a few days after extraction may indicate a dry socket. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange a wisdom tooth assessment. Mention any pain, swelling or recurring gum infections near the back teeth.
Bring a medication list and any recent X-rays, and arrange a driver if sedation might be used for removal.

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy and easy to clean may be kept and monitored. Removal is recommended when they cause problems or are likely to in the future.
Many people feel better within a few days to a week, though complete healing takes longer. Recovery depends on the complexity of the extraction and following aftercare instructions.
Many wisdom teeth are removed with local freezing. Sedation may be offered for anxious patients or complex cases. Deeper sedation is often provided by an oral surgeon.
It is an infection of the gum around a partially erupted wisdom tooth. It can cause pain, swelling and bad taste. Recurrent episodes often lead to a recommendation for removal.
Rest for the first day or two and avoid strenuous activity. Ask the dentist when it is safe to resume swimming and other activities based on your recovery.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal can be planned with care. Long Point patients can learn about extraction, healing and replacement at our Port Dover office.
When a tooth is badly broken or infected beyond repair, urgent removal may be advised. Long Point patients can call our Port Dover office to discuss assessment.
