Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsThird molars, considered carefully
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in fully and cause no trouble. Others are impacted, growing at an angle or trapped beneath the gum or bone, which can lead to pain, infection, damage to neighbouring teeth or cysts. X-rays help the dentist judge whether removal is advisable.
Teens and adults from Jarvis can have their wisdom teeth evaluated at our Port Dover office. Some extractions can be done in the office, while more complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.

Should they come out
Repeated gum infections around a partially erupted tooth, decay in the wisdom tooth or the molar beside it, damage to neighbouring roots, cysts and pain are common reasons for removal. Wisdom teeth that are hard to clean may also be considered for extraction to prevent future problems.
Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy, functional and easy to clean may not need removal. Some impacted teeth that cause no symptoms or damage can be monitored with periodic X-rays. The dentist will explain the reasons for their recommendation and the risks of leaving or removing the teeth.
Preparation
Share your medical history, medications and allergies. Blood thinners, certain conditions and previous reactions to anaesthesia are important. If sedation is planned, follow instructions about eating and drinking. The dentist will explain the procedure, risks and expected recovery in advance.
Arrange a ride home if you will have sedation, and plan to rest for a day or two. Stock soft foods such as yogurt, soup and smoothies, along with ice packs and any recommended pain relief. Clear your schedule of strenuous activities for the first few days.
The procedure
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and sedation may be used if appropriate. For impacted teeth, a small incision may be made and the tooth may be removed in sections. You will feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Let the dentist know if you are uncomfortable.
Gauze is placed to help a clot form, and stitches may be used. You will receive written aftercare instructions. Some swelling, bruising and discomfort are normal and usually peak within the first couple of days before gradually improving.
Recovery
Use ice packs for swelling, take pain relief as advised and eat soft foods. Avoid spitting, using straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the period recommended, as these can dislodge the clot. Gentle salt-water rinses may be suggested after the first day. Rest and keep your head elevated.
Contact the office if pain increases after a few days, bleeding persists, swelling worsens or you develop a fever or bad taste. These may indicate dry socket or infection. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or swallowing or rapidly spreading swelling.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment of your wisdom teeth. Mention any pain, swelling or gum problems at the back of the mouth.
If you have recent X-rays, bring them or ask the office how to have them sent, and arrange a driver if sedation is planned.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that are easy to clean may stay. Impacted or problematic teeth are more likely to be recommended for removal.
Removal is often easier in the late teens or early twenties, when roots are less developed. However, the decision depends on each person’s situation.
Many people feel much better within a few days to a week. Full healing of the bone takes longer. Follow aftercare instructions closely.
Local anaesthetic is always used. Sedation may be available or recommended for some patients. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.
It occurs when the clot is lost from the socket, causing increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if pain worsens instead of improving.
When a tooth cannot be saved, a planned extraction can relieve pain and protect your health. Read how removal, healing and replacement are discussed for Jarvis patients.
When a tooth is badly broken or infected, urgent removal may be the safest option. Learn how emergency extractions are decided and how Jarvis patients can prepare.
