Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually come in during the late teens or early twenties. Some erupt fully and cause no problems. Others are partially erupted, angled or impacted beneath the gum or bone, which can lead to pain, infection, decay or damage to neighbouring teeth. Whether to remove them depends on their position, symptoms and future risk.
Hagersville patients can have their wisdom teeth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist explains the findings, whether removal is recommended now, later or not at all, and whether referral to an oral surgeon would be appropriate.

Should they come out?
Repeated gum infections around a partially erupted tooth, pain, swelling, cavities in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front, cysts and damage to neighbouring teeth are common reasons for removal. X-rays show the tooth’s angle, root development and proximity to nerves and sinuses, which help the dentist weigh the benefits and risks of extraction.
Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, healthy, functional and easy to clean may not need removal. Impacted teeth that cause no symptoms are sometimes monitored with periodic X-rays. The dentist will explain the reasoning and the potential risks of both keeping and removing the teeth, so you can make an informed choice.
Planning the procedure
Your medical history, medications and any bleeding or healing concerns are reviewed. X-rays, and sometimes more detailed imaging, help plan the extraction. If roots are close to the nerve in the lower jaw or the sinus in the upper jaw, the dentist will discuss any related risks before you decide how to proceed.
Simple extractions of erupted wisdom teeth may be done in the dental office with local anaesthetic. Deeply impacted teeth, complex anatomy or a preference for deeper sedation may lead to referral to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain the options and help you decide. Plan for a driver home to Hagersville if sedation is used.
The day of
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and sedation may be used if arranged. The dentist may need to make a small opening in the gum or divide the tooth into pieces for easier removal. You will feel pressure and movement but should not feel sharp pain. Tell the team immediately if you do.
Gauze is placed to control bleeding, and you will receive written aftercare instructions. Swelling and discomfort typically peak within the first two to three days. Arrange to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Have soft foods, ice packs and any recommended pain relief ready before your appointment.
Recovery
Avoid smoking, straws, spitting and vigorous rinsing for the first day or longer to protect the blood clot. Eat soft, cool foods and gradually return to normal meals. Use ice packs on the cheeks for the first day. Begin gentle saltwater rinses as advised. Keep brushing other teeth carefully, avoiding the extraction sites initially.
Contact the office if bleeding does not slow with firm pressure, pain worsens after a few days, you notice a foul taste or develop a fever. These may indicate dry socket or infection. Numbness that persists after the anaesthetic should have worn off also needs follow-up. Seek emergency care for breathing or swallowing difficulty.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment for wisdom teeth, especially if you have pain, swelling or difficulty cleaning at the back of your mouth. The team can arrange X-rays and discuss options.
Bring a full medication list and any previous X-rays. If sedation may be used, arrange a driver and plan for a few days of rest.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that can be cleaned well may stay. Removal is often recommended for impacted teeth causing problems or at high risk of future issues. The dentist will assess your specific situation.
Removal is often easier in younger adults, when roots are less developed and healing tends to be quicker. However, timing depends on symptoms and risks. The dentist will advise based on your X-rays and history.
Most people feel better within several days to a week, though healing of the bone continues for weeks. Swelling usually peaks around the second or third day. Complex extractions may take longer to recover from.
Many extractions are done with local anaesthetic alone, sometimes with sedation for comfort. Deeper sedation or general anaesthesia may be available through referral to an oral surgeon. Discuss your preferences with the dentist.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the extraction site, exposing bone and causing increasing pain a few days after surgery. Avoid smoking and straws. Contact the office if you suspect it, as treatment can relieve the pain.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal is planned carefully. Hagersville patients can learn about assessment, the procedure and healing after an extraction.
Sometimes an infected or broken tooth must come out quickly. Hagersville patients can learn when urgent extraction is considered and how recovery is managed.
