Caring for Boston, Ontario patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for Boston patientsThe last molars to arrive
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in fully and cause no problems at all. Others are impacted, meaning they are trapped in the jaw or only partly erupted, which can lead to pain, infection, decay or damage to neighbouring teeth. An assessment helps decide whether to remove them or simply monitor them.
If you or your teenager live in Boston and have questions about wisdom teeth, our Port Dover office can examine them and take x-rays to see their position. The dentist will explain whether removal is recommended and, if so, whether it can be done in the office or needs a referral.

Assessment
Pain or swelling at the back of the mouth, tender gum around a partly erupted tooth, a bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth or repeated infections can all signal problems. Wisdom teeth that are hard to reach with a toothbrush may also cause decay in the neighbouring molars. X-rays help show their angle, depth and relationship to the nerves in the jaw.
Wisdom teeth that have erupted fully, are healthy and can be cleaned well may not need removal at all. Some impacted teeth cause no symptoms and may be monitored with periodic x-rays instead. The dentist will explain the risks and benefits of removing or keeping them in your particular situation, so the decision is based on your own mouth.
Planning
Share medical conditions, medications, allergies and any previous reactions to anaesthesia. Some medications affect bleeding or healing and may need to be planned around. Removal is often easier when the roots are not yet fully formed, which is one reason timing is discussed for younger patients. Plan for a few days of rest and soft foods afterward.
Straightforward extractions may be done at the office. Deeply impacted teeth, teeth very close to nerves or patients who prefer deeper sedation may be referred to an oral surgeon instead. The dentist will explain the reasons for any referral and what each option involves, including likely waiting times and what to expect on the day.
The procedure
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic before anything else begins. Some patients may also be offered nitrous oxide or other sedation to help them relax. Follow any instructions about eating, drinking and arranging a ride home exactly. Ask questions beforehand so you know what to expect on the day and feel prepared rather than anxious.
For fully erupted teeth, removal may be similar to a regular extraction. Impacted teeth may require a small incision in the gum, removal of a little bone or dividing the tooth into sections. Stitches may be placed afterward. You should feel pressure but not sharp pain; tell the dentist straight away if you feel discomfort so more anaesthetic can be given.
Recovery
Swelling, bruising and soreness are common and often peak in the first couple of days. Apply cold compresses to the outside of the face, rest with your head slightly raised and eat soft, cool foods. Avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing to protect the blood clots in the sockets. Follow the pain relief instructions you were given.
Contact the office if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure, pain increases after a few days, swelling worsens, you develop a fever or you notice a bad taste or odour. These may signal dry socket or infection, both of which can be treated. Keep any follow-up appointments so the dentist can check that healing is on track.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a wisdom teeth assessment. Mention any pain, swelling or difficulty opening your mouth, so the team can plan an appropriate appointment and allow time for x-rays.
If removal is recommended, ask about recovery time so you can plan school, work or farm duties around it in advance.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that can be cleaned well may not need removal. The dentist will assess yours with an exam and x-rays and explain whether removal is recommended now, later or not at all.
An impacted wisdom tooth is trapped in the jaw or under the gum, often because there is not enough room for it to come in. It can cause pain, infection or damage to nearby teeth, though some impacted teeth cause no problems for years.
Many people feel noticeably better within a few days to a week, though full healing of the bone takes longer. Recovery depends on how many teeth were removed, how complex the extraction was and how closely aftercare instructions are followed.
Local anaesthetic is always used to numb the area. Some patients may also have nitrous oxide or other sedation. Deeper sedation may require referral to an oral surgeon. The dentist will discuss the comfort options with you in advance.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the extraction site, exposing the bone underneath. It causes increasing pain a few days after surgery. Contact the office if you suspect it, since treatment can ease the discomfort quickly.
When a tooth cannot be saved, a careful extraction and recovery plan matter. Boston patients can talk through removal and replacement in Port Dover.
When an infected or badly broken tooth cannot wait, urgent removal may be advised. Boston patients can learn how Port Dover decides and what recovery is like.
