Wisdom teeth are the third molars, usually appearing in the late teens or early twenties. Some come in fully and function well. Others become impacted, meaning they are trapped under the gum or bone, or partially erupt at an angle. Problems can include pain, infection, damage to neighbouring teeth, cysts or difficulty keeping the area clean.
Bloomsburg patients with questions about their wisdom teeth can have them assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the teeth, review X-rays and explain whether removal is recommended now, later or not at all, along with what the procedure and recovery involve if extraction is the right choice.

Assessment
Pain or swelling at the back of the mouth, gum tenderness, a bad taste, difficulty opening the jaw or food getting trapped around a partially erupted tooth can indicate a problem. Some impacted wisdom teeth cause no symptoms but may still affect neighbouring teeth. The dentist will examine the area and ask about any discomfort you have had.
X-rays show the position of the wisdom teeth, their roots, the surrounding bone and nearby structures such as nerves and sinuses. This helps the dentist decide whether the teeth are likely to cause problems and how complex removal would be. The dentist will explain the findings and discuss whether monitoring or extraction is recommended for each tooth.
Decision
Removal may be recommended if wisdom teeth cause repeated infections, pain, damage to neighbouring teeth, cysts or gum disease, or if they are unlikely to erupt properly. Removing problem teeth earlier, when roots are less developed, may make recovery easier for some people. The dentist will explain the reasons behind any recommendation clearly and openly.
If wisdom teeth are healthy, fully erupted and easy to clean, they may not need to come out. Impacted teeth causing no problems may be monitored with periodic X-rays. The dentist will discuss the pros and cons of removing versus monitoring, so you can make a decision that suits your situation and comfort level best.
Procedure
Share your medical history, medications and allergies. The dentist will explain the type of anaesthetic or sedation planned and give instructions about eating and drinking beforehand. If sedation is used, you will need someone to drive you home. Complex cases, such as deeply impacted teeth near nerves, may be referred to an oral surgeon instead.
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, and sedation may be offered for comfort. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Some teeth come out simply, while others need a small incision or sectioning. Stitches may be placed. The dentist will give you aftercare instructions and explain what to expect during recovery at home.
Recovery
Swelling, mild bleeding and discomfort are common for the first few days. Bite on gauze as directed, apply cold packs to the cheek and take pain relief as recommended. Eat soft foods, avoid using straws, spitting forcefully and smoking, and keep your head elevated when resting. Gentle salt-water rinses may be advised after the first day.
Contact the office if bleeding does not slow, pain worsens after a few days, swelling increases or you develop a fever or bad taste. These may indicate infection or dry socket. Keep any follow-up appointments so the dentist can check healing and remove stitches if needed. Most people recover well with proper care and rest.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment of your wisdom teeth. Mention any pain, swelling or difficulty opening your mouth, and whether you have had X-rays of them taken elsewhere.
If sedation might be used, ask about transport requirements and arrange for someone to accompany you home after the procedure.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Wisdom teeth that are healthy, fully erupted and easy to clean may not need removal. The dentist will assess your teeth and explain whether removal, monitoring or no action is recommended in your case.
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure. Discomfort and swelling afterward are common and usually manageable with recommended pain relief. The dentist will explain what to expect.
Many people feel better within a few days to a week, though healing continues for longer. Recovery depends on how complex the extraction was. Following aftercare instructions helps reduce discomfort and complications such as dry socket.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot in the extraction site is lost too early, exposing bone. It can cause significant pain a few days after surgery. Avoid straws, smoking and spitting, and call the office if pain worsens.
Some wisdom teeth, particularly those deeply impacted or near nerves, may be better removed by an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain if a referral is recommended and why, and help you understand the next steps.
When a tooth cannot be saved, a careful extraction and a plan for the gap matter. Bloomsburg patients can discuss removal and healing with our Port Dover dentist.
When a tooth is badly broken or infected beyond repair, urgent removal may be discussed. Bloomsburg patients can call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment.
