Tooth sensitivity is a brief, sharp discomfort triggered by cold, heat, sweet or acidic foods, or even brushing. It often happens when the protective enamel wears down or gums recede, exposing the dentin underneath, which contains tiny tubes leading toward the nerve. Cavities, cracked teeth, worn fillings and recent dental work can also cause sensitivity.
Walsingham patients with sensitive teeth can have them assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look for the cause, rule out problems like decay or cracks and suggest treatments ranging from special toothpaste to protective coatings or repairs, depending on what is found.

Causes
Brushing too hard, acidic foods and drinks, grinding and acid reflux can wear away enamel. Gum recession, often from aggressive brushing or gum disease, exposes root surfaces that lack enamel. Exposed dentin lets hot, cold and sweet stimuli reach the nerve more easily, causing sharp twinges.
Cavities, cracked teeth, chipped edges and worn or leaking fillings can also cause sensitivity. Teeth may be temporarily sensitive after whitening, cleanings or new fillings. Identifying the cause is important, because some need repair rather than just desensitizing treatment.
Assessment
Note which teeth are sensitive, what triggers the pain and how long it lasts. Brief twinges that fade quickly are typical of exposed dentin. Pain that lingers or throbs may suggest a nerve problem. Mention brushing habits, diet, grinding and any recent dental work.
The dentist examines teeth for wear, recession, decay, cracks and failing restorations. They may test teeth with air or cold and take X-rays. These findings help separate simple sensitivity from problems that need treatment, such as a cavity or cracked tooth.
Treatment
Toothpaste for sensitive teeth, used consistently for several weeks, can reduce sensitivity for many people. Fluoride rinses or prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste may also help. Using a soft toothbrush and gentle technique protects enamel and gums from further wear.
The dentist may apply fluoride varnish or a desensitizing agent to exposed areas. Bonding can cover exposed roots or worn spots. Cavities and failing fillings are repaired. In some cases of severe recession, a gum graft may be discussed. If the nerve is affected, root canal treatment may be needed.
Prevention
Brush gently with a soft brush and avoid scrubbing back and forth. Limit acidic foods and drinks like citrus, soda and sports drinks, and rinse with water afterwards. Wait a little while after acidic foods before brushing, as enamel is softer right after acid exposure.
If you grind or clench, a night guard can help protect enamel. Treating acid reflux with your physician may reduce enamel erosion. Regular checkups help catch problems early. Report sensitivity that worsens or lingers, as it may signal a problem needing treatment.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham patients can call our Port Dover office and describe which teeth are sensitive and what triggers the discomfort. The team will arrange an exam to find the cause.
Note any recent whitening, dental work or changes in diet, and bring the toothpaste and rinses you currently use.

Many people notice improvement after a few weeks of regular use. It needs to be used consistently. If there is no improvement, have your teeth checked.
It can be, but there are many causes, including worn enamel, gum recession and cracks. A dental exam helps identify the reason.
Whitening gel can temporarily increase sensitivity. It usually fades after whitening ends. Sensitive toothpaste may help. Contact the office if it persists.
Mild sensitivity sometimes improves with gentler brushing and diet changes. Persistent or worsening sensitivity should be assessed to rule out problems.
Severe or lingering pain, throbbing or swelling may signal infection or nerve damage. Call the office promptly in these cases.
Sharp pain when you bite and release could be a cracked tooth. Walsingham patients can learn how cracks are found and why early treatment can protect the tooth.
Prevention is the easiest dental care. Walsingham households can learn how hygiene visits, fluoride, diet and daily cleaning work together to protect teeth and gums.
