Tooth-coloured restorations include composite fillings, ceramic inlays and onlays, and porcelain or ceramic crowns. They repair damage from decay, cracks or wear while matching the shade of surrounding teeth. Many people choose them for visible areas, but they are also used on back teeth. The right option depends on how much tooth is damaged, your bite and how long you want the repair to last.
Windham Centre patients looking to repair a tooth with a natural appearance can discuss options at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the tooth, explain which materials are suitable and outline the benefits and limitations of each, so you can choose with a clear picture.

Types of restorations
Composite resin is placed directly into the tooth and shaped during one appointment. It bonds to enamel and dentin and can be matched closely to your tooth shade. Composite works well for small to moderate cavities, chips and worn edges. It may stain or wear over time, especially on heavy chewing surfaces, and occasional polishing helps keep it looking fresh.
Ceramic inlays, onlays and crowns are made in a lab or with digital milling, then bonded to the tooth. They are durable, resist staining and can be very lifelike. They often require two appointments and more tooth preparation than composite. The dentist will recommend ceramic when a tooth needs more strength or coverage than a direct filling can provide.
Choosing wisely
The dentist looks at the size and location of the damage, how much healthy tooth remains, your bite and whether you grind or clench. Front teeth may prioritise appearance, while back teeth need to handle chewing forces. Your oral hygiene, cavity risk and preferences also matter. The dentist will explain how each factor influences the recommendation for that particular tooth.
Composite is more conservative and typically less costly upfront, while ceramic may last longer and resist staining better. Neither is permanent, and both can chip or wear. Ask about the expected lifespan, maintenance and cost of each option. A written estimate can help you compare choices and check your coverage before you commit to anything.
Treatment
The tooth is numbed and decay or old restoration material is removed. For composite, the tooth is prepared and the material is placed in layers, shaped and cured with a light. For ceramic restorations, the tooth is shaped, impressions or scans are taken and a temporary is placed while the final restoration is made, usually over a short period.
Composite restorations are finished and polished at the same visit. Ceramic restorations are bonded in place at a second appointment, after checking the fit, colour and bite. In both cases, the dentist checks that your bite feels comfortable and that the restoration blends naturally with surrounding teeth before you leave the office later that day.
Long-term care
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss around restorations to prevent decay at their edges. Limit staining foods and drinks if you have composite restorations, or rinse with water afterward. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using your teeth as tools. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can protect both restorations and natural teeth.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect restorations for wear, chips, staining or leaks. Small problems can often be repaired before they become bigger. Report any sensitivity, rough edges or changes in your bite between visits. Over time, restorations may need replacing, and the dentist will discuss timing and options with you when that time comes around.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment. Windham Centre patients can mention which teeth they want repaired, whether the concern is decay, wear or appearance, and any treatment already suggested.
If you plan to whiten your teeth, mention it so the dentist can advise whether to whiten first and then match the restorations.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Modern composites and ceramics are strong enough for many situations, including back teeth. For very large restorations or heavy biting forces, the dentist may recommend ceramic or another option. They will explain the reasoning for your tooth.
Composite can pick up stains from coffee, tea and tobacco over time, while ceramic resists staining well. Polishing at hygiene visits can refresh composite. Ask the dentist which material suits your habits and appearance goals.
If metal fillings are worn, cracked or you prefer a tooth-coloured look, replacement may be possible. Removing sound fillings removes some tooth structure, so the dentist will discuss the benefits and risks before you decide.
Lifespan depends on the material, location, your bite and oral hygiene. Many restorations last for years. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor them and recommend repair or replacement when needed, before bigger problems develop underneath.
Restorations do not change colour with whitening. If you plan to whiten, it is usually best to do it first so new restorations can be matched to your brighter shade. Existing ones may need replacing afterward.
Tooth-coloured composite fillings can repair cavities and minor damage. See how Windham Centre patients are assessed and treated for fillings in Port Dover.
