Tooth-coloured restorations repair damaged teeth using materials that blend with your natural smile. They include composite fillings, ceramic inlays and onlays, and all-ceramic or zirconia crowns. Each option suits a different amount of damage, and choosing well means balancing appearance, strength, tooth preservation and cost for the specific tooth being treated.
Walsh patients can discuss tooth-coloured options at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the tooth, explain which restoration fits the size and location of the damage, and describe how each choice is likely to look, last and need to be maintained over time.

Options
Composite resin is used for small to medium cavities, chipped edges and worn areas on front or back teeth. It is placed directly in a single visit, bonded to the tooth and shaped by hand to blend in. It preserves more natural tooth structure than many alternatives, but it can stain or wear over time and may need touching up or replacing eventually.
For larger areas of damage, ceramic inlays or onlays reinforce the tooth while still preserving the healthy parts around them. Crowns cover the whole visible tooth when it is badly broken or weakened. Ceramic and zirconia are strong and stain-resistant, though they usually require more than one visit because they are made in a dental lab.
Choosing
Front teeth often prioritize appearance, since they show when you talk and smile, while back teeth need to withstand heavy chewing forces day after day. Grinding or clenching can strongly affect which material will last best in your mouth. The dentist will explain why a particular option is recommended for each tooth, rather than applying one rule to all of them.
Direct composite is generally less costly up front but may need replacement sooner than ceramic. Ceramic restorations cost more initially but may last longer with good care, which can even out over the years. Ask about the expected lifespan and maintenance of each option, so you can weigh the long-term value as well as the immediate price.
Treatment
For composite, the tooth is numbed, the decay is removed and the resin is placed in thin layers, each hardened with a curing light. It is then shaped, the bite is checked and the surface is polished to a natural sheen. Most composite restorations are completed in a single appointment, which can be convenient when travel needs to be kept to a minimum.
Ceramic inlays, onlays and crowns usually involve preparing the tooth, taking impressions or digital scans and placing a temporary restoration. The final restoration is then bonded in place at a second visit once it returns from the lab. Ask about the timing between visits, so you can plan your return trip from Walsh well in advance.
Care
Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and limit sugary and acidic snacks to protect the natural tooth underneath and around the restoration. Rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine to reduce staining of composite. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice or pens, and wear a night guard if you grind, since grinding shortens the life of any restoration.
Regular exams let the dentist check the edges of your restorations for wear, chipping or new decay. Small issues can often be repaired or polished before they become larger, more costly problems. Contact the office between visits if a restoration feels rough, chipped, sensitive or loose, rather than waiting for it to fail completely or fall out.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment. Let us know which tooth concerns you and whether it is painful, broken or simply something you would like to look better in your smile.
If you plan to whiten your teeth, mention it, since restorations are usually shade-matched after whitening is complete and settled.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Modern ceramics and composites are strong enough for many situations. For very heavy biting forces or people who grind, the dentist will discuss which material offers the best balance of strength and appearance for that tooth.
Composite can absorb stains over time, especially from coffee, tea and tobacco. Ceramic is far more stain-resistant. Regular cleanings and rinsing after staining drinks help keep restorations looking natural for longer between professional polishing visits.
Often, yes, especially if the old fillings are worn, cracked or leaking. The dentist will check whether replacement is advisable and discuss which material suits each tooth, based on how much healthy structure remains in it.
Many last for years with good care, though lifespan depends on bite forces, habits and hygiene. Regular checkups help identify wear or problems early, so they can be addressed before they grow into something larger.
Restorations do not change colour with whitening, so it is best to whiten first and then match restorations to your new shade. The dentist can help you plan the order of treatment if you would like both.
