When a child has a cavity, the decay needs to be removed and the tooth rebuilt. Tooth-coloured fillings, usually made from composite resin or glass ionomer, blend with natural teeth and bond to the tooth surface. They can be used in both baby and adult teeth, depending on the size and location of the cavity and how well the area can be kept dry.
Walsingham families can have their children’s cavities assessed and treated at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether a tooth-coloured filling is the best choice, describe the appointment in child-friendly terms and discuss ways to keep your child comfortable.

Materials
Composite resin is a durable, tooth-coloured material placed in layers and hardened with a light. It bonds well to enamel and can be shaded to match. It requires the tooth to be kept dry during placement, which can be challenging with young children, so the dentist considers your child’s ability to cooperate.
Glass ionomer releases small amounts of fluoride, which may help protect the tooth. It is more tolerant of moisture and can be useful for baby teeth, small cavities or when a quicker placement is helpful. It may wear faster than composite in heavy-chewing areas. The dentist will recommend the best material for each tooth.
When used
Tooth-coloured fillings work well for small to moderate cavities in front and back teeth. They can also repair chipped edges and cover areas of weak enamel. For baby teeth, the dentist considers how long the tooth is likely to stay in place before falling out naturally.
If decay is extensive or a baby molar is badly damaged, a crown may hold the tooth together better than a large filling. If the nerve is affected, other treatment may be needed first. The dentist will explain the reasons for each recommendation and answer your questions.
The visit
Numbing gel is applied before freezing to make the injection more comfortable. The team uses child-friendly words and explains each step. Once the tooth is numb, decay is removed. A small rubber sheet or cotton may be used to keep the tooth dry. Your child can raise a hand if they need a break.
The tooth-coloured material is placed, shaped and, for composite, hardened with a blue light. The dentist checks the bite and polishes the filling. The appointment length depends on the number and size of fillings. Some children manage better with shorter visits for multiple fillings.
Afterwards
Watch your child until freezing wears off to prevent lip, cheek or tongue biting. Offer soft foods. Mild sensitivity can occur for a short time. Contact the office if your child has increasing pain, swelling or if the filling feels high when biting.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and help younger children clean well. Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals. Avoid chewing ice or hard candies. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and catch new cavities early, when treatment is simpler.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham parents can call our Port Dover office to book treatment for a child’s cavity. Mention any pain, anxiety or past dental experiences so the team can plan the visit.
Bring a comfort item, a list of your child’s medications and allergies, and any questions you have about the filling.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Composite and glass ionomer fillings are widely used for children. The dentist will choose the material best suited to your child’s tooth and situation.
It depends on the material, tooth and habits. Fillings in baby teeth may only need to last until the tooth falls out. Regular checkups help monitor them.
Usually, yes, to keep the tooth comfortable. Very small fillings may sometimes be done without it. The dentist will explain what to expect.
Occasionally fillings can chip or come loose. Contact the office if this happens. Avoiding sticky and hard foods helps protect them.
Baby teeth help with chewing, speech and holding space for adult teeth. Removing them early can cause spacing problems. The dentist will consider the best option.
