When a child has a cavity, a filling removes the decay and restores the tooth so it can keep doing its job. Tooth-coloured fillings, usually made from composite resin or glass ionomer, match the natural shade of teeth. They bond to the tooth surface, which often allows the dentist to remove less healthy structure, an advantage for small teeth.
Walsh families can have their child’s cavities assessed and filled at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain which material suits the tooth, how the appointment will go and what you can do at home to help the filling last and prevent new cavities from forming.

Is a filling needed
The dentist examines the tooth and may take small X-rays to see the size and depth of the decay and how close it is to the nerve. Very early spots that have not broken through the enamel may simply be watched and treated with fluoride instead. Cavities that have broken through the enamel usually need filling to stop them spreading deeper.
For baby teeth, the dentist also considers how long the tooth will remain in the mouth before it falls out naturally. A tooth expected to stay for several more years often benefits from a filling, while one that is already loose and about to fall out may only need monitoring. The reasoning will be explained to you clearly before anything is done.
Materials
Composite resin is durable and closely matches the colour of the tooth, so the repair is hard to spot. It does require the tooth to stay completely dry while it is placed, which can be a challenge with very young or wriggly children. It is commonly used for both front and back teeth in children who can sit still for the few minutes needed.
Glass ionomer releases small amounts of fluoride over time, which may help protect against new decay around the edges of the filling. It is less sensitive to moisture during placement, making it useful for young children or for areas that are hard to keep dry. It may wear a little faster than composite, which the dentist will take into account.
The appointment
A flavoured topical gel numbs the gum first, and then a local anaesthetic is given gently. The team uses child-friendly words, such as sleepy juice for the tooth, and explains each step before it happens. The decay is carefully removed. A small rubber shield or cotton rolls help keep the tooth dry, and short breaks can be taken whenever your child needs them.
The filling material is then placed, shaped to match the tooth and hardened with a blue light if composite is used. The dentist checks the bite and smooths the surface so it feels natural. Most children are surprised at how quickly it is all over. Praise their effort afterwards, which helps build confidence for future visits.
Aftercare
Watch your child closely until the numbness wears off, which usually takes a couple of hours, so they do not bite or chew their lip, cheek or tongue without realizing. Soft foods are easiest for the rest of the day. Mild tenderness is normal. Call the office if pain increases, the bite feels uneven or swelling appears around the tooth.
Help your child brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss between teeth that touch and limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals. Regular checkups from Walsh let the dentist monitor existing fillings and catch any new problems early. Sealants may also be suggested to protect the grooves of other back teeth from developing cavities of their own.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if your child has a cavity or tooth sensitivity. The dentist will assess the tooth and explain whether a tooth-coloured filling is the recommended repair for it.
Let us know if your child is nervous or has had a difficult visit before, so the team can plan a gentle approach in advance.

Baby teeth help with chewing, speech and holding space for the adult teeth. Untreated cavities can cause pain or infection, sometimes years before the tooth is due to come out. The dentist considers timing carefully before recommending a filling.
Yes. Composite and glass ionomer materials are commonly used in children’s dentistry. The dentist will choose the material best suited to the tooth, your child’s age and the size and position of the cavity being repaired.
Usually, yes. Local anaesthetic keeps the tooth comfortable during treatment. The numbness lasts a couple of hours afterward, so watch that your child does not bite their lip or cheek until normal feeling fully returns.
Lifespan depends on the material, the tooth and your child’s habits. Many last until a baby tooth falls out naturally. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor the fillings and repair or replace them if they wear.
Let the team know beforehand. They use gentle explanations, breaks and positive reinforcement. For significant anxiety, the dentist may discuss nitrous oxide or other comfort options where they are suitable for your child and the treatment.
