When a child has a cavity, a filling removes the decay and rebuilds the tooth so it can work normally again. Tooth-coloured fillings, usually made from composite resin or glass ionomer, blend in with natural teeth and bond to the tooth surface. They can be used in both baby and adult teeth, depending on the size and location of the cavity and the child’s needs.
Families in Vanessa can have their child’s cavities assessed and treated at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain what was found, which filling material is most suitable and what to expect during the appointment, and will adapt the pace and explanations to suit your child’s age and comfort.

Why fill baby teeth
Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and hold space for adult teeth. Some baby molars stay in place until around age twelve. Keeping them healthy supports good nutrition, comfortable eating and proper alignment of adult teeth. Even though they will eventually fall out, a cavity in a baby tooth is still worth treating in most cases.
Untreated decay can grow quickly in baby teeth because the enamel is thinner. It may lead to pain, infection, swelling and difficulty eating or sleeping. Infection can sometimes affect the developing adult tooth underneath. Treating cavities early is usually simpler and more comfortable than waiting until they become painful, and it often means a shorter appointment for your child.
Material choices
Composite resin is a tooth-coloured material that bonds to the tooth and is shaped to match its natural contours. It is durable and blends well, making it a common choice for both front and back teeth. Placing composite requires keeping the tooth dry, which can be a factor for very young or anxious children who struggle to sit still.
Glass ionomer is another tooth-coloured material that releases fluoride, which can help protect against new decay. It can be useful for baby teeth, small cavities near the gums or children who have trouble staying still. For large cavities, a crown may be more appropriate. The dentist will explain why a particular option is recommended for your child.
The appointment
The dentist usually numbs the area to keep your child comfortable, often using numbing gel first. They explain each step in child-friendly language. The decayed part of the tooth is removed carefully, and the tooth is cleaned and prepared. Children can raise a hand if they need a break, and the team will pause and reassure them.
The filling material is placed in the tooth, shaped to match the natural tooth and hardened with a special light if composite is used. The dentist checks your child’s bite and smooths the filling. Afterward, your child should avoid chewing until the numbness wears off, so they do not accidentally bite their cheek, lip or tongue.
Afterward
Some sensitivity or tenderness for a day or two is normal and usually settles. Offer soft foods if needed and give children’s pain relief according to the package if your child is uncomfortable. Call the office if your child has swelling, fever or pain that worsens, or if the filling feels high or rough when they bite.
Help your child brush twice daily with an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, and floss where teeth touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals and at bedtime. Ask about sealants for back teeth and professional fluoride varnish at checkups. Regular checkups help catch new cavities while they are small and far easier to treat.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an exam if you suspect your child has a cavity, or to schedule a filling. Let the team know about your child’s comfort level and any past dental experiences.
Mention any medical conditions, medications or sensory sensitivities, and bring a comfort item if it helps your child feel secure.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Tooth-coloured materials like composite resin and glass ionomer are commonly used in children’s dentistry and are considered safe. The dentist will explain which material is best suited for your child’s tooth and answer any questions you have about it.
Most fillings require local anaesthetic to keep the tooth comfortable. The dentist uses gentle techniques, often starting with numbing gel. Talk with the team about how they will explain this to your child, so you can use similar words at home.
It depends on the material, the size of the filling and your child’s habits. Fillings in baby teeth often last until the tooth falls out naturally. The dentist checks fillings at regular visits for wear or gaps.
Let the team know before the appointment. They can slow down, explain each step, take breaks and discuss options such as nitrous oxide. Building trust over time helps many children feel more comfortable at later visits.
Many can. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, sealants on back teeth and regular checkups all help protect children’s teeth from decay. Water between meals is a simple habit that makes a real difference.
A cavity in a baby tooth still matters. Vanessa parents can learn how decay is found, how fillings are explained to kids and how home habits help prevent more.
