When a child has a cavity, the decayed part of the tooth needs to be removed and replaced with a filling. Tooth-coloured fillings, usually made from composite resin or glass ionomer, match the natural shade of the tooth. They bond directly to the tooth and can often be placed with less removal of healthy structure than older methods.
Turkey Point families can bring children to our Port Dover office for assessment and filling treatment. Let the team know if your child has had fillings before and how they felt about the experience.

Why fill the tooth
Baby teeth help children chew, speak and smile, and they hold space for adult teeth. Some baby molars stay until around age twelve. A cavity left untreated can cause pain, infection and difficulty eating. Filling the tooth keeps it healthy until it is ready to fall out naturally.
Decay can spread quickly in young teeth because their enamel is thinner. A small cavity can reach the nerve if left too long, which may lead to more involved treatment. Catching and filling cavities early is usually simpler for both the child and the dentist.
Material options
Composite resin is a tooth-coloured material that bonds to enamel and can be shaded to match the tooth closely. It is durable and suitable for many cavities in both baby and adult teeth. The tooth must be kept dry during placement, which requires some cooperation from the child.
Glass ionomer is another tooth-coloured option that releases fluoride, which may help protect against further decay. It is sometimes used in baby teeth, for cavities near the gum line or when keeping the tooth completely dry is difficult. The dentist will explain which material is recommended and why.
The appointment
The tooth is usually numbed with local anaesthetic, described to children as making the tooth sleepy. The dentist removes the decay and cleans the tooth. Children may feel pressure or vibration but should not feel pain. The team encourages breaks and offers reassurance throughout.
The filling material is placed, shaped to match the tooth and, for composite, hardened with a special light. The dentist checks the bite and smooths any rough edges. The appointment length depends on the number and size of fillings. Larger treatment may be spread over more than one visit.
After the filling
Watch that your child does not bite or chew their numb lip, cheek or tongue until the feeling returns. Offer soft foods. Mild tenderness can occur and usually settles quickly. Contact the office if your child has increasing pain, swelling or says the filling feels high when biting.
Help with brushing twice daily using fluoride toothpaste, and start flossing where teeth touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. Sealants and fluoride treatments may help protect other teeth. Regular checkups allow new cavities to be caught early.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an exam or filling appointment for your child. Mention any tooth pain, sensitivity or concerns about how your child will cope.
Bring your child’s health information and a comfort item. Choose a time of day when your child is typically rested and calm.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Composite and glass ionomer are commonly used in children. The dentist will choose the material best suited to the tooth and situation.
The tooth is numbed, so most children feel pressure but not pain. The team explains sensations in child-friendly terms.
Many last until the baby tooth falls out. Fillings in adult teeth can last for years with good care.
Untreated decay can cause pain and infection and may affect the adult tooth. Filling protects the tooth until it naturally falls out.
Treatment may be spread across appointments to keep each visit manageable. The dentist will suggest a plan suited to your child.
A cavity in a baby tooth still matters. Turkey Point parents can learn how decay is found, how treatment is explained to kids and how to prevent the next one.
Children cope better when they understand what is happening. Turkey Point parents can learn how treatment is explained to kids and how to reinforce it at home.
