When a child has a cavity, a tooth-coloured filling made from composite resin or a similar material can repair the tooth and restore its shape. These fillings bond to the tooth and are matched to its colour, so they are less noticeable than metal. They are used in both baby and permanent teeth, depending on the size and location of the cavity.
Selkirk families whose child needs a filling can expect the team at our Port Dover office to explain the process in child-friendly terms and answer parents’ questions beforehand. Planning the appointment for a time when your child is rested can help the visit go smoothly and keep the drive home calm.

Why fill baby teeth?
Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and hold space for adult teeth. Untreated cavities can cause pain, infection and even affect the developing adult tooth. Some baby molars stay in the mouth until age ten to twelve. Repairing decay helps keep the tooth healthy and functional until it is naturally replaced by the permanent tooth.
Very early decay may sometimes be managed with fluoride and closer monitoring. A baby tooth that is about to fall out may not need a filling. Large cavities may require a crown or other treatment instead. The dentist will explain why a tooth-coloured filling is recommended or why another approach may suit your child better.
The material
Tooth-coloured fillings are matched to the tooth’s shade, so they blend in when your child smiles. They bond to the tooth, which may allow the dentist to remove less healthy tooth structure. They are commonly used for small to moderate cavities on both front and back teeth, and can also repair chipped edges in some cases.
Composite placement requires the tooth to stay dry, which can be challenging with very young or wriggly children. In some situations, other materials such as glass ionomer may be used, which release fluoride. The dentist will choose the most suitable material for your child’s tooth, age and ability to cooperate during the appointment.
The appointment
Explain the visit simply and positively, avoiding words like drill or needle. The dental team may use child-friendly terms such as sleepy juice for anaesthetic. Let the team know if your child is anxious or has sensory sensitivities. Bring a comfort item if it helps, and plan the appointment for a time when your child is usually calm.
Local anaesthetic is often used to keep the tooth comfortable. The dentist removes the decay, cleans the area and applies the tooth-coloured material in layers, hardening each with a special light. The filling is shaped and polished, and the bite is checked. The team will explain each step to your child as they go.
After the filling
If anaesthetic was used, watch that your child does not bite their lip, cheek or tongue while the area is numb. Offer soft foods once feeling returns. Mild sensitivity for a short time can occur. Call the office if your child has persistent pain, swelling or says their bite feels uneven, so the dentist can check it.
Supervise brushing twice daily with an amount of fluoride toothpaste suited to your child’s age, and help clean between teeth. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. Ask whether sealants or fluoride treatments would benefit your child. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and catch new problems early.
Planning your appointment

Bring your child’s medical information and a comfort item, and plan soft foods for after the appointment if numbing is used.

Tooth-coloured materials are commonly used in children’s dentistry. The dentist will choose a material suited to your child’s tooth and situation. Ask any questions you have about the materials being used, and the team will explain them clearly.
Local anaesthetic is often used to keep the tooth comfortable, especially for deeper cavities. Some very small fillings may not need it. The dentist will explain the plan and use child-friendly language to prepare your child for each step.
It depends on the size, location, the child’s habits and oral hygiene. Fillings in baby teeth only need to last until the tooth falls out naturally. Regular checkups help monitor fillings and catch any problems early.
Baby teeth help with chewing, speech and holding space for adult teeth. Untreated decay can cause pain or infection. The dentist will consider how long the tooth is expected to remain when recommending treatment and explain the reasoning to you.
Let the team know beforehand. They can use clear explanations, breaks and signals to help. In some cases, other comfort options may be discussed. The approach is chosen individually based on your child’s needs, health and age.
