Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsRepairs that blend in
When a child has a cavity, the decayed part of the tooth needs to be removed and the space filled to restore its shape and strength. Tooth-coloured fillings, usually made of composite resin, bond to the tooth and are shaded to blend in. They are commonly used for both baby and permanent teeth when the cavity is small to moderate in size.
Lynedoch families whose child needs a filling can arrange treatment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a tooth-coloured filling is recommended, how your child will be kept comfortable and what to watch for once you are home.

Why white fillings
Composite fillings match the colour of the surrounding tooth, so they are less noticeable than metal fillings. Many parents and children prefer this, especially for teeth visible when smiling. The dentist will choose a shade that blends with your child’s natural enamel.
Composite bonds directly to tooth structure, which often allows the dentist to remove less healthy tooth than with some older materials. This conservative approach is helpful for small teeth. The dentist will explain whether composite is suitable for the size and location of your child’s cavity.
Preparing your child
Use simple, positive words to explain that the dentist will clean out a sugar bug and fill the tooth to make it strong. Avoid frightening words like needle or drill. Let your child know they can raise a hand if they need a break.
Schedule the appointment at a time when your child is usually rested and fed. Bring a comfort item if it helps. Tell the team about any previous difficult experiences or anxiety so they can adjust their approach and pacing during treatment.
The appointment
Freezing is usually used to keep the tooth comfortable. The dentist explains what the child will feel in simple terms. Once the area is numb, the decay is removed and the tooth is cleaned. A small barrier may be used to keep the tooth dry during the procedure.
The composite is applied in layers and hardened with a special light, which children often find interesting. The dentist shapes and polishes the filling so it fits the bite. Your child will be asked to bite down gently to check that everything feels right.
After the filling
After treatment, the lip, cheek or tongue may feel numb for a while. Watch that your child does not bite or chew the numb area. Offer soft foods and avoid hot drinks until feeling returns. Some mild tenderness may occur but usually fades quickly.
Encourage brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing where teeth touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks to reduce the risk of new cavities. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the filling and catch any new decay early.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to schedule your child’s filling. Mention any anxiety or medical conditions so the team can prepare an approach that suits your child.
Plan a calm activity for after the visit while numbness wears off, and bring a favourite comfort item if helpful.

Composite fillings are widely used for children’s teeth. The dentist will discuss the material and why it is recommended for your child’s specific cavity.
Freezing is commonly used to keep the tooth comfortable. Very small fillings may sometimes be done without it. The dentist will explain the plan and what your child will feel.
They can last until the baby tooth falls out naturally, depending on the size of the filling and the child’s habits. Regular checkups help monitor them.
Wait until numbness wears off to avoid biting the lip or cheek. Soft foods are a good choice at first. The filling is hardened during the appointment.
Tell the team when booking. The visit can be paced with explanations and breaks. Comfort options may also be discussed if appropriate for your child.
