When a child has a cavity, a tooth-coloured filling made of composite resin or a similar material can restore the tooth while blending with its natural colour. These materials bond to the tooth, often allowing the dentist to preserve more healthy structure. They are used for both baby and permanent teeth, depending on the size and location of decay and how long the tooth is expected to remain.
Long Point families whose child needs a filling can arrange treatment at our Port Dover office. The team will explain the process in child-friendly language and check comfort throughout.

Why fill baby teeth
Baby teeth help children chew, speak and hold space for adult teeth. Some baby molars remain until around twelve years of age. Untreated cavities can grow, cause pain or lead to infection that may affect the developing adult tooth. Filling the tooth helps prevent these problems.
If a baby tooth is very close to falling out or decay is very small, the dentist may suggest monitoring or fluoride instead of a filling. The decision depends on the tooth, the cavity and your child’s age. Ask the dentist to explain the reasoning behind the recommendation.
Materials
Composite resin is a durable, tooth-coloured material that bonds to enamel and dentin. It is often used for front and back teeth. Placement requires keeping the tooth dry, which may need extra care with young or wiggly children.
Glass ionomer is another tooth-coloured material that releases fluoride and is more tolerant of moisture. It may be used for baby teeth or in children at higher cavity risk. The dentist will choose a material based on the tooth, cavity size and your child’s ability to cooperate.
The appointment
If freezing is needed, the team uses child-friendly language and techniques to minimize discomfort. Numbing gel may be applied first. The dentist explains each step, using a tell-show-do approach. Your child can raise a hand to request a break at any time.
Decay is removed, the tooth is prepared and the filling is placed in layers and hardened with a light. The dentist shapes and polishes it and checks the bite. Afterward, your child’s lip or cheek may feel numb for a while, so watch that they do not bite it.
Aftercare
Offer soft foods until numbness wears off and supervise eating to prevent lip or cheek biting. Mild tenderness can occur and usually settles. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling appears or the filling feels high or rough.
Help your child brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss between teeth. Limit sweet snacks and drinks, and offer water between meals. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and catch new decay early. Ask whether sealants could protect other teeth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to schedule your child’s filling. Mention their age, any anxiety and whether they have had fillings before so the team can plan the visit.
Bring a comfort item and a list of your child’s medicines and allergies, and choose a time when your child is rested.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Tooth-coloured materials such as composite and glass ionomer are widely used for children. The dentist will choose a material suited to your child’s tooth and needs.
Often, for cavities that go beyond the enamel. Small, shallow cavities may need little or none. The dentist will explain comfort options before starting treatment.
Fillings in baby teeth often last until the tooth falls out. Fillings in permanent teeth can last years with good care. Regular checkups help monitor their condition.
Frequent snacking, sweet drinks, deep grooves and missed brushing areas can contribute. The dentist can identify patterns and suggest changes, sealants or fluoride to reduce risk.
Ask the team about their approach for your child’s visit. Many families find a parent nearby helpful. The plan can be discussed beforehand to suit your child.
