When a child has a cavity, the decayed part of the tooth needs to be removed and the space filled to restore its shape and strength. Tooth-coloured fillings, usually made of composite resin or glass ionomer, blend in with the natural tooth and bond to its surface. They are commonly used for both baby teeth and newly erupted adult teeth in children of many ages.
Langton families whose child needs a filling can have the procedure done at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain which material is recommended for the tooth, what the appointment involves and how to prepare your child, keeping the visit as calm and comfortable as possible for both of you.

Why fill it
Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and hold space for adult teeth. Some remain in the mouth until around age twelve. An untreated cavity can grow, cause pain or infection and lead to early tooth loss, which may affect how adult teeth come in. Filling a cavity helps the tooth stay healthy until it is naturally lost.
Decay can progress more quickly in baby teeth because their enamel is thinner. A small cavity left untreated may reach the nerve, requiring more involved treatment. Filling cavities early is usually simpler and more comfortable for your child. The dentist will explain how urgently the filling is needed and what could happen if it is delayed.
Material choices
Composite resin is a durable, tooth-coloured material that bonds strongly to the tooth. It is shaped and hardened with a curing light and can be matched closely to the natural shade. Composite works well for many cavities but requires the tooth to stay dry during placement, which can be challenging for some young children who find it hard to keep still.
Glass ionomer releases small amounts of fluoride, which can help protect the surrounding tooth from further decay. It is less sensitive to moisture during placement, making it useful for very young children or areas that are hard to keep dry. It may wear faster than composite, so it is often chosen for baby teeth that will be lost in time.
The appointment
Use simple, positive language to explain the visit, such as the dentist will clean out a sugar bug and fix the tooth. Avoid words like needle or drill. Choose a time when your child is usually rested. Tell the team about any worries, past experiences or sensory sensitivities so they can adapt their approach to suit your child.
The dentist numbs the tooth, often after applying a numbing gel, and removes the decay. The tooth is cleaned, and the filling material is placed, shaped and hardened. The dentist checks the bite and smooths the surface. The team explains each step in child-friendly terms and allows breaks if needed throughout the appointment, so nothing feels rushed.
Aftercare
Your child’s lip, cheek and tongue may stay numb for a while. Watch that they do not bite, chew or scratch the numb area, which can cause injury. Offer soft foods once feeling returns. Mild sensitivity can occur for a few days and usually settles. Call the office if pain worsens or the filling feels uneven when biting.
Help your child brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss between teeth. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the filling and catch new cavities early. Ask whether sealants or fluoride treatments could help protect your child’s other teeth from future decay. Prevention is often the easiest treatment of all.

Tooth-coloured fillings blend in with natural teeth, bond to the tooth surface and often require less removal of healthy tooth. Some types release fluoride. The dentist will recommend the most suitable material based on the tooth and your child’s needs.
Local anaesthetic is often used to keep the tooth comfortable, usually after a numbing gel is applied. Very small fillings may not need it. The dentist will explain what is planned so you can prepare your child honestly.
Fillings in baby teeth often last until the tooth falls out naturally. Fillings in adult teeth can last many years with good care. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor fillings and repair or replace them if needed.
Composite fillings are hardened before your child leaves, but wait until the numbness wears off to prevent biting the lip or cheek. Start with soft foods. The dentist may give specific instructions depending on the material used.
Let the team know in advance. They can take extra time, explain each step and allow breaks. In some cases, comfort options such as nitrous oxide or referral to a pediatric specialist may be discussed.
When a Langton child has a cavity, learn how decay in baby and adult teeth is assessed, which repairs may be suggested and how to prepare your child.
Children cope better with dental care when they know what to expect. Langton parents can learn how treatment is explained to kids and how to prepare them.
