When decay creates a cavity in a child’s tooth, the damaged part is removed and replaced with a filling to restore shape and function. Tooth-coloured materials, such as composite resin or glass ionomer, blend with natural teeth and bond to the tooth surface. Some also release small amounts of fluoride, which may help protect the tooth from further decay along the edges.
Hillcrest families can have their child’s cavities treated with tooth-coloured fillings at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain which material suits the tooth, how the appointment will be kept comfortable and what to expect once you are home. Questions from your child are always welcome too.

Choosing materials
Composite resin is a durable, tooth-coloured material shaded to match surrounding teeth. It bonds well and suits many cavities in both baby and permanent teeth. Placement requires keeping the tooth dry, which can be challenging with very young or wriggly children. The dentist will consider whether this material is practical for your child’s tooth and their ability to sit still.
Glass ionomer is another tooth-coloured option that releases fluoride and is less sensitive to moisture during placement. It may suit baby teeth, cavities near the gumline or children at high risk of decay, though it can wear faster than composite. For large cavities, a crown designed for baby teeth may be recommended instead. The dentist will explain the options.
Preparing your child
Use gentle language, such as saying the dentist will clean the sugar bugs out and make the tooth strong again. Avoid words like needle, drill or hurt. Reassure your child without promising they will feel nothing. Picture books or play with a toy dentist kit can help. Keep the lead-up short for young children, who may worry more with a long wait.
Let the team know about medical conditions, medications, allergies and any previous difficult dental experiences. Mention sensory sensitivities or strategies that help your child stay calm. If your child is very anxious, ask about comfort options such as nitrous oxide or dividing treatment across visits, so the dentist can plan accordingly well before the appointment day.
The procedure
Topical numbing gel is often applied before local anaesthetic, which the team may describe as sleepy juice for the tooth. The dentist removes decay using gentle instruments and keeps the tooth dry with cotton rolls or a small rubber sheet. Your child may feel pressure, vibration or water spray, and the team will check in with them throughout.
The tooth-coloured material is placed in the cavity, shaped to restore the tooth and hardened with a special light if composite is used. The dentist checks the bite and smooths the filling. Many fillings are completed in a single short appointment. The dentist will praise your child for their cooperation and let you know how the visit went.
Afterwards
Numbness may last a few hours. Watch that your child does not bite or chew their lip, cheek or tongue during this time, which is a common cause of sores after dental treatment. Offer soft foods once feeling returns. Mild sensitivity can occur and usually settles. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling develops or the filling feels high.
Help your child brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss where teeth touch. Limit frequent snacks and sugary drinks to reduce the risk of new cavities around the filling. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and catch new decay early. Sealants and fluoride may also be recommended to protect your child’s other teeth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book treatment and let the team know about your child’s temperament and any worries they have. The team can suggest the best time of day and explain what to expect during the visit.
Plan a quiet activity for after the appointment while numbness wears off, and keep soft foods on hand for when your child is ready to eat.

Modern tooth-coloured materials are durable and widely used for children’s teeth. Some may wear faster than amalgam in heavy-biting areas. The dentist will recommend the material best suited to the size and location of your child’s cavity.
Many fillings involve local anaesthetic to keep the tooth comfortable, although very small fillings may not. The dentist will explain the process to your child in gentle terms and use topical gel first to reduce the feeling of the injection.
Fillings in baby teeth often last until the tooth falls out naturally, though some may need repair. The dentist monitors fillings at regular checkups and will let you know if any need attention before the tooth is lost.
Composite fillings are hardened during the appointment, so they are set when your child leaves. It is best to wait until numbness wears off before eating to avoid accidental biting of the cheek, lip or tongue.
The team can try gentle approaches, shorter visits or comfort measures such as nitrous oxide. In some cases, referral to a provider who offers treatment under sedation may be discussed. The dentist will explore options that suit your child.
When a child has a cavity, the right step depends on the tooth and the child. Hillcrest families can discuss treatment and comfort with our Port Dover team.
Children cope better with dental care when they understand it. Hillcrest parents can learn how our Port Dover team explains treatment in words kids can follow.
