Tooth-coloured fillings, usually made from composite resin, repair cavities in baby and adult teeth while matching the natural shade of the tooth. They bond to the remaining tooth structure and can be used on front and back teeth. For children, a filling helps stop decay from spreading and keeps the tooth comfortable for chewing and speaking.
If your child has a cavity, Glen Meyer families can discuss tooth-coloured fillings with the dentist at our Port Dover office. The team will explain how the filling is placed, how your child can be prepared and what to watch for afterward, once you are back home.

Why fill the tooth
Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and hold space for adult teeth. Untreated cavities can grow, cause pain and lead to infection, which may affect the developing adult tooth underneath. Repairing a cavity early can keep the tooth healthy until it is ready to fall out naturally. The dentist will consider how long the tooth is expected to remain.
Tooth-coloured fillings are often suitable for small to moderate cavities. If decay is extensive or the tooth is badly broken, a crown or other treatment may be recommended instead. Very early decay may sometimes be managed with fluoride and monitoring. The dentist will explain the reasons for their recommendation and the options for your child’s tooth.
Preparing your child
Use simple, honest words, such as explaining that the dentist will clean out a sugar bug and fill the tooth so it stays strong. Avoid frightening words like needle, drill or pain. Reading books or watching child-friendly videos about fillings may help. Answer questions calmly, and let your child know they can raise a hand if they need a break.
Tell the team about your child’s medical history, medications and allergies, as well as any anxiety, sensory sensitivities or previous difficult experiences. This information helps the team plan the best approach. Ask whether you can stay with your child and how you can best support them during the appointment. Some children do better with a parent close by, while others settle more easily when the team leads.
Placing the filling
The area is usually numbed with local anaesthetic, sometimes after applying a numbing gel to the gum. The dentist removes the decay and prepares the tooth. A small rubber sheet or cotton rolls may be used to keep the tooth dry. The team may describe each instrument in friendly terms to help your child feel at ease.
Composite material is placed in layers and hardened with a special light. The dentist shapes the filling to fit your child’s bite and polishes it. The procedure is often relatively quick, but if your child becomes very upset, the dentist may pause or discuss completing treatment at another visit to protect your child’s trust in future visits.
After the filling
Numbness can last for a while after the appointment. Remind your child not to chew on their lip, tongue or cheek, and offer soft foods until feeling returns. Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a few days. Contact the office if your child has increasing pain, swelling or fever in the days after treatment.
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth to help prevent new cavities. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the filling and catch any new decay early. Sealants and fluoride treatments may also be recommended to protect other teeth that are at risk.

Tooth-coloured composite fillings are commonly used for children’s teeth. The dentist will explain the materials used and why they are recommended. Ask any questions you have about safety or alternatives before treatment begins, so you feel comfortable.
The tooth is usually numbed, so most children feel pressure or vibration rather than pain. Let the team know if your child seems uncomfortable, so they can pause or provide more anaesthetic if needed before continuing.
Lifespan depends on the size of the filling, the tooth and your child’s habits and home care. Fillings in baby teeth often last until the tooth falls out. Regular checkups help monitor the filling’s condition.
Baby teeth support chewing, speech and space for adult teeth. Untreated decay can cause pain, infection and problems with the developing adult tooth. The dentist considers how long the tooth will remain when recommending treatment.
Your child can usually eat once numbness wears off. Until then, offer soft foods and supervise to prevent accidental biting of the lip or cheek. If the filled tooth feels sensitive, choose foods that are not too hot or cold.
