When a child has a cavity, a filling removes the decay and restores the tooth’s shape. Tooth-coloured materials such as composite resin or glass ionomer bond to the tooth and match its natural colour. They are commonly used in both baby and permanent teeth, depending on the size and location of the cavity.
Families from Cultus can bring their child to our Port Dover office for an assessment if a cavity is suspected. The dentist will explain whether a filling is recommended, which material suits the tooth and how the team will keep your child comfortable from start to finish.

Why fillings matter
Cavities grow over time, and decay can eventually reach the nerve, causing pain or infection. Filling a cavity removes the decayed portion and seals the tooth. Early treatment usually means a smaller filling and a simpler visit for your child. Very early decay may even be managed with fluoride and closer monitoring instead of a filling, so it is worth having spots checked promptly.
Baby teeth help children chew, speak and hold space for adult teeth. Untreated decay in baby teeth can cause pain, infection and problems for the developing adult tooth. The dentist will consider how long the baby tooth is expected to remain when recommending treatment. A tooth due to fall out soon may simply be watched.
Materials
Composite resin is a durable, tooth-coloured material that bonds to enamel. It is often used for front and back teeth. Placing composite requires keeping the tooth dry, which can be challenging with very young children. The dentist will decide whether it is the best option and explain the reasons in plain, parent-friendly terms before starting.
Glass ionomer is another tooth-coloured material that releases fluoride and is less sensitive to moisture during placement. It may be used for baby teeth or areas near the gumline. It is generally less wear-resistant than composite. The dentist will explain the choice. For a baby tooth that will fall out in a year or two, a less wear-resistant material may be perfectly adequate.
The appointment
Talk about the visit calmly and use simple, positive words. On the day, the team explains each step in child-friendly language. Numbing is usually used to keep your child comfortable. The dentist may use a small rubber sheet or cotton rolls to keep the tooth dry. Children are often told it is a raincoat for the tooth.
The decay is removed, the tooth is prepared and the filling material is placed and shaped. Composite is hardened with a special light. The dentist checks the bite and polishes the filling. Your child can usually return to normal activities right away. Praise for sitting through treatment helps build confidence, and a small reward at home can mark the occasion without involving sweets.
Aftercare
If your child was numbed, watch that they do not bite their lip, cheek or tongue until feeling returns. Offer soft foods. Some sensitivity can occur and usually fades. Call the office if pain increases, swelling develops or the filling feels high. Young children may show discomfort by avoiding chewing on one side rather than telling you directly.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and help with flossing. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. Ask about sealants and fluoride varnish for added protection. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and catch new cavities early. Offering water instead of juice between meals is one of the simplest changes a family can make to protect children’s teeth.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Composite and glass ionomer materials are commonly used in children’s dentistry. The dentist can answer questions about the materials used for your child. Feel free to ask before treatment begins on the day itself.
Most fillings are done with local anaesthetic to keep the child comfortable. Very small fillings may need little or none. The dentist will explain the plan and describe numbing to your child in gentle words.
Lifespan depends on the material, location and care. Fillings in baby teeth often last until the tooth falls out naturally. Regular checkups help monitor them, and small repairs can usually be made if an edge wears.
Often, yes. Untreated cavities can cause pain, infection and problems for adult teeth. The dentist considers your child’s age and the tooth when recommending treatment. Some baby molars stay until the preteen years or longer.
Let the team know in advance. They use gentle, child-friendly approaches and can take breaks. If needed, other comfort options can be discussed. A short practice visit beforehand can also help a great deal with nerves.
