When a child has a cavity, a tooth-coloured filling can restore the tooth with material that closely matches its natural shade. These fillings are commonly used for both baby and adult teeth. They bond to the tooth surface and can often be placed with minimal removal of healthy structure, which is especially helpful for small, still-developing teeth.
Families in Boston can bring children to our Port Dover office for cavity treatment. If your child has a sore tooth, sensitivity to sweets or cold, or a visible dark spot, mention it when booking so the dentist can examine it and explain whether a filling is the right next step.

Why fill a cavity
Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and hold space for the adult teeth developing underneath. Untreated decay can cause pain, infection and early tooth loss, which may affect how adult teeth come in. The dentist will consider how long a baby tooth is expected to stay when recommending treatment, since a tooth close to falling out may be managed differently.
Newly erupted adult teeth have enamel that is still maturing and can decay surprisingly quickly, particularly in the deep grooves of back molars. Filling a cavity promptly protects the tooth for the long term and keeps the repair small. The dentist may also suggest sealants on neighbouring teeth to help prevent further decay from starting in similar spots.
Material choice
Composite resin and similar materials blend with the tooth and bond directly to its surface. This can allow a more conservative preparation that keeps more healthy tooth. Some tooth-coloured materials also release small amounts of fluoride, which may help protect the surrounding tooth. They are a popular choice for both front and back teeth in children.
Large cavities in baby molars, or children who find it hard to stay still for the time a composite filling needs, may sometimes be better suited to other options, such as preformed crowns. The dentist will explain the reasons and what each choice means for your child’s comfort, the length of the visit and how long the repair is likely to last.
The appointment
Explain the visit in simple, neutral terms, such as the dentist will clean a spot and make the tooth strong again. Avoid frightening words like needle or drill. Let the team know if your child is anxious, so they can adjust their pace. Choose a time when your child is rested and fed, and bring a comfort item if it helps them settle.
The tooth is usually numbed so the child stays comfortable throughout. The decay is removed, the tooth is kept dry and the filling material is placed in layers, each hardened with a small blue light. The dentist then shapes and polishes the filling and checks the bite. The process is often quicker than parents expect.
Afterward
If numbing was used, watch that your child does not bite their lip, cheek or tongue until feeling returns, which can take a few hours. Offer soft foods in the meantime. Mild sensitivity can occur and usually fades within days. Contact the office if your child has increasing pain, swelling or says the filling feels high when they bite.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss where teeth touch and limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals. Regular checkups let the dentist monitor fillings and catch new decay early, while it is still small. Ask about sealants or professional fluoride for added protection, especially for back teeth that are hard for children to clean well.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an exam or filling appointment for your child. Mention which tooth seems affected and whether your child has pain, sensitivity or swelling around it.
Let the team know about any anxiety or past difficult visits, so they can plan an approach that suits your child.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Tooth-coloured fillings are widely used in children’s dentistry for both baby and adult teeth. The dentist will choose a material suited to your child’s tooth and explain why it is recommended, and you are welcome to ask questions about it.
Numbing is commonly used to keep treatment comfortable, and the team will explain it in gentle, child-friendly terms. Supervise your child afterward so they do not chew on their numb lip or cheek until normal feeling has returned.
It depends on the size of the filling, the tooth and your child’s habits. Fillings in baby teeth often last until the tooth falls out naturally. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor them and repair any that wear or chip.
Untreated decay can cause pain, infection and early tooth loss, which may affect the adult teeth that follow. The dentist will consider the tooth’s expected lifespan when recommending treatment and will explain the options to you.
Many can. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, limiting sugary snacks and drinks and keeping regular checkups all help. Sealants and professional fluoride treatments may provide extra protection, depending on your child’s individual risk of decay.
