The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints and the muscles around them can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, ear discomfort and difficulty opening or closing the mouth. Many TMJ problems are temporary and improve with simple, conservative treatment.
Walsingham patients with jaw pain can have their joints and muscles assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look for possible causes, such as grinding, clenching or bite problems, and explain treatment options. If the issue seems more complex, referral to another health professional may be suggested.

Symptoms
Aching around the jaw joints or cheeks, clicking or popping when you open your mouth, a jaw that feels stiff in the morning or that locks open or closed are common symptoms. Pain may worsen with chewing, talking or yawning. Note when symptoms occur and what makes them better or worse.
Headaches around the temples, earaches, a feeling of fullness in the ears and neck or shoulder tension can be linked to jaw problems. These symptoms can also have other causes, so it is important to have them assessed. Mention any recent injury to the jaw or face.
Assessment
The dentist feels the jaw joints and muscles for tenderness, listens for clicking, measures how wide you can open and watches how your jaw moves. Teeth are checked for wear, cracks and bite problems. X-rays or other imaging may be suggested in some cases to look at the joints.
Grinding, clenching, stress, poor posture, arthritis and past injuries can contribute to TMJ problems. Sleep issues may play a role. The dentist will ask about these factors and may suggest involving your physician, a physiotherapist or other professional if needed.
Treatment
Eating softer foods, avoiding gum and wide yawning, applying warm or cold compresses and gentle jaw exercises may ease symptoms. Keeping teeth apart and the jaw relaxed during the day helps reduce clenching. Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed if safe, can help in flare-ups.
A custom night guard or splint may reduce grinding forces and muscle strain. Physiotherapy, stress management and posture correction can also help. Irreversible treatments, like permanently changing the bite, are generally not first-line options. The dentist will explain what is suitable for you.
Ongoing care
Keep a simple diary of symptoms, triggers and what helps. Bring your splint or night guard to follow-up visits so the dentist can check its fit and effect. Many people find symptoms improve over weeks to months with conservative care.
If pain persists, worsens, or your jaw locks frequently, the dentist may recommend referral to a specialist for further evaluation. Sudden changes in your bite, severe pain or swelling should be assessed promptly. Ongoing communication with the dental team helps find what works for you.

Many TMJ problems improve with conservative treatment and time. Some people have recurring flare-ups. The dentist can help manage symptoms and suggest further care if needed.
Not always. Clicking without pain or limited movement may only need monitoring. Painful clicking or locking should be assessed.
It may help some people by reducing clenching and grinding forces. The dentist will assess whether a guard or splint is likely to help in your case.
Surgery is rarely needed and is considered only for specific conditions after conservative treatments have been tried. Most people improve without it.
Stress can increase clenching and muscle tension, contributing to jaw pain. Relaxation techniques and stress management may help alongside dental treatment.
