The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, allowing you to talk, chew and yawn. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles, often called TMJ or TMD, can cause jaw pain, clicking, limited opening, headaches or earaches. Causes include clenching, grinding, injury, arthritis and stress, and often more than one factor is involved.
Walsh patients with jaw discomfort can have it assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the joints, muscles and bite, discuss your symptoms and history, and suggest conservative treatments first, while explaining when referral to another provider, such as a physiotherapist, may be helpful.

Symptoms
Aching in the jaw or just in front of the ears, clicking or popping sounds, a jaw that locks or catches, difficulty opening wide and pain when chewing tougher foods are all typical. Symptoms may be worse in the morning if you clench during the night, or later in the day after a lot of talking, chewing gum or concentrating with your teeth together.
Headaches, especially around the temples, earaches without any sign of infection, tension in the neck and shoulders and even tooth sensitivity can all be connected to jaw problems. Keep a simple note of when symptoms occur and what seems to trigger them, such as stress, certain foods or long drives, to share with the dentist at your visit.
Assessment
The dentist gently feels the jaw joints and the chewing muscles for tenderness, listens for clicking, measures how wide you can open and watches how your jaw moves from side to side. Your bite and any tooth wear are checked as well. X-rays or other imaging may be recommended in some cases, particularly after an injury or if arthritis is suspected.
Clenching, grinding, posture, stress, sleep habits and past injuries to the face are all discussed. Some medical conditions, such as arthritis, can affect the jaw joint directly. Identifying the contributing factors helps the dentist suggest treatments that address the underlying causes, not just the symptoms, which tends to give longer-lasting relief than treating pain alone.
Treatment
Eating softer foods for a while, avoiding gum and very wide yawns, applying warm or cold compresses, gentle jaw stretches and stress management often help a great deal. Being aware of daytime clenching, and keeping your teeth slightly apart when relaxed, reduces strain on the joints and muscles. Over-the-counter pain relief may be suggested if it is safe for you.
A custom night guard or splint may help reduce clenching forces and ease muscle tension overnight. If symptoms persist despite these measures, referral to a physiotherapist, your physician or a specialist may be recommended. Irreversible treatments, such as reshaping the bite, are generally avoided unless they are clearly necessary and well supported by the findings.
Ongoing care
Follow-up visits allow the dentist to see how your symptoms are responding and to adjust any appliance as needed. Keep track of pain levels, clicking and how wide you can open between visits. Improvement is often gradual over weeks or months rather than immediate, so patience and consistency with self-care matter a great deal to the outcome.
Flare-ups can happen during stressful periods, busy seasons or after long dental appointments. Returning to your self-care strategies early usually helps them settle more quickly. Contact the office if your jaw locks, pain becomes severe or your symptoms change significantly, rather than waiting for your next scheduled visit from Walsh. A locked jaw in particular is easier to manage when it is seen early.

Causes can include clenching, grinding, jaw injury, arthritis, stress and posture. Often several factors combine. The dentist will look at your history and symptoms to identify the likely contributors and suggest suitable treatment for you.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and may not need any treatment. If it comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening, it is worth having it assessed by the dentist to find out why it is happening.
A custom guard or splint may help reduce clenching forces and muscle strain, especially if you grind at night. It is often used alongside self-care measures. The dentist will advise whether it is likely to help in your case.
Many cases improve with time and conservative care. Some people have recurring flare-ups over the years. Identifying triggers and following self-care strategies can help reduce how often symptoms return and how severe they become each time.
If symptoms persist despite conservative care, your jaw locks or the pain is severe, the dentist may recommend referral to a physiotherapist, physician or TMJ specialist for further assessment and more specific treatment options for your jaw.
