Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaEasing jaw discomfort
The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow you to talk, chew and yawn. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause pain, clicking, popping, limited opening, headaches or ear discomfort. Temporomandibular disorders have many possible contributors, including grinding, clenching, injury, arthritis and stress, so assessment is the first step.
Villa Nova patients dealing with jaw pain can have it assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the joints and muscles, discuss your symptoms and explain conservative management options.

Recognizing symptoms
Aching around the jaw joint or chewing muscles, clicking or popping when opening, difficulty opening wide, a jaw that catches or locks, and pain when chewing are common. Symptoms may come and go or worsen at certain times of day. Note what triggers them and how long they last.
Headaches, ear pain or fullness, neck and shoulder tension and tooth sensitivity can accompany jaw problems. Because these symptoms overlap with other conditions, the dentist may suggest seeing your physician if something else seems more likely.
Assessment
The dentist will check how your jaw opens and moves, listen for joint sounds, feel the muscles for tenderness and examine your teeth for wear or bite changes. They may ask about grinding, clenching, injuries, stress and sleep. This builds a picture of what may be contributing.
X-rays or other imaging may be suggested in some cases. If symptoms are complex, persistent or related to arthritis or injury, referral to a specialist, physiotherapist or physician may be recommended. The dentist will explain why.
Management
Soft foods, avoiding wide yawning and gum chewing, applying moist heat or cold, gentle jaw exercises and stress management can help many people. The dentist may suggest specific exercises or habits to reduce strain on the joints and muscles.
A custom oral appliance worn at night may help reduce clenching and grinding. Physiotherapy, medication recommended by a physician or other therapies may be part of a broader plan. Irreversible treatments such as major bite changes are generally not a first step.
Ongoing care
Keep a simple record of symptoms, triggers and what helps. This information is useful at follow-up visits. Many people find symptoms improve with conservative care, though flare-ups can occur during stressful periods.
Contact the office if pain worsens, your jaw locks, opening becomes more limited or symptoms do not improve with the suggested measures. Bring any appliance to checkups so its fit and effect can be reviewed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe your jaw symptoms. The team can arrange an assessment so the dentist can examine the joints and discuss management options.
Note when symptoms started, what triggers them and any history of injury, grinding or arthritis to share at your appointment.
