Easing jaw discomfort

Many jaw problems improve with careful assessment and conservative care.

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. Problems with these joints and the muscles around them, often called TMJ or TMD, can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, ear discomfort, limited opening or a jaw that locks. Causes include clenching, grinding, injury, arthritis, stress and bite issues.

If you live in Vanessa and have jaw pain or clicking, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess your jaw joints, muscles and bite. Many TMJ problems improve with simple, conservative measures. The dentist will explain what they find and suggest a plan, and will recommend referral if a specialist opinion is needed.

Recognizing it

TMJ problems can show up in different ways.

  • Common signs

Pain or tenderness in the jaw, face, temples or around the ears is common. You may hear clicking, popping or grating when opening or chewing. Some people have difficulty opening wide, feel the jaw get stuck, or notice that their bite feels different. Headaches, neck pain and tooth soreness can also be related. Symptoms may come and go.

  • When to seek help promptly

Seek prompt care if your jaw locks open or closed, if pain is severe or worsening, or if symptoms started after an injury. Swelling, fever or a sudden change in your bite also need attention. If you have chest pain or other signs of a heart problem along with jaw pain, call 911 immediately rather than waiting for a dental visit.

Assessment

Understanding the cause helps guide treatment.

Examining the jaw and muscles

The dentist asks about your symptoms, when they started and what makes them better or worse. They examine your jaw joints, listen for clicking, check how far and how smoothly you can open, and feel the chewing muscles for tenderness. Your teeth and bite are checked for signs of grinding, clenching or uneven wear across the teeth.

Considering contributing factors

Stress, clenching during the day, grinding at night, poor posture, chewing gum frequently and certain sleep patterns can all contribute. Arthritis or past injuries may also play a role. X-rays or other imaging may be recommended in some cases. The dentist will explain their findings and whether referral to a specialist would help in your case.

Treatment

Most TMJ treatment starts with simple, reversible steps.

Self-care and habit changes

Eating softer foods, avoiding gum and very chewy foods, and not opening extremely wide can give the joints a rest. Warm or cool compresses, gentle jaw stretches and relaxation techniques can ease muscle tension. Becoming aware of daytime clenching, resting the tongue on the roof of the mouth and keeping teeth slightly apart can help reduce strain.

Night guards and other therapies

A custom night guard or splint can reduce the effects of grinding and clenching during sleep. Over-the-counter pain relief may help in the short term. Physiotherapy, massage or other therapies may be suggested. If symptoms persist despite these measures, the dentist may refer you to a specialist for further evaluation and a wider range of treatment options.

Long-term

TMJ problems often improve with time and care.

  1. Tracking symptoms

Keep track of when symptoms occur and what seems to trigger them, such as stress, certain foods or poor sleep. This information helps the dentist adjust your plan. Many people find that symptoms improve over weeks to months with consistent self-care. Flare-ups can happen, but they often settle faster when you already know what helps you.

  2. Follow-up visits

Return for follow-up visits so the dentist can check your progress, adjust any night guard and look for changes in your bite. If symptoms worsen, new problems appear or your jaw locks, call the office. Avoid permanent changes to your teeth or bite without a clear diagnosis and careful discussion of the options and their risks.

TMJ questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is jaw clicking a sign of a serious problem?

Clicking without pain is common and often not a concern. If clicking comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening, it is worth having it assessed. The dentist can examine your jaw and explain whether treatment is needed.

Can a night guard help with TMJ pain?

A night guard may help if grinding or clenching contributes to your symptoms by reducing strain on the joints and muscles. It is often part of a broader plan that includes self-care and habit changes.

Will I need surgery for TMJ problems?

Most TMJ problems improve with conservative care and do not require surgery. In rare cases where symptoms persist and are severe, a specialist may discuss other options. The dentist will refer you if needed and explain why.

Can stress cause jaw pain?

Yes. Stress can lead to clenching or grinding, which strains the jaw muscles and joints. Relaxation techniques, awareness of clenching and addressing sources of stress may help reduce symptoms over time, alongside other steps the dentist suggests.

Should I avoid certain foods?

During flare-ups, eating softer foods and avoiding gum, very chewy or hard foods and large bites can give your jaw a rest. Cutting food into small pieces and chewing on both sides may also help until the jaw settles.
