Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause pain, clicking, popping, limited opening, headaches or a feeling that the bite has changed. Many cases are linked to clenching, grinding, stress or injury, and many improve with conservative care.
If your jaw has been aching or clicking, Turkey Point patients can have it assessed at our Port Dover office. Describe when symptoms began, what makes them worse and whether your jaw ever locks open or closed.

Recognize symptoms
Aching in the jaw, face, temples or around the ears, especially in the morning or after chewing, is common. Clicking or popping when you open your mouth may occur with or without pain. Headaches and neck tension sometimes accompany jaw problems. Keep a note of when symptoms are worst.
Difficulty opening wide, a jaw that catches or locks, or a sense that your teeth do not fit together the way they used to can also be signs. Sudden locking that prevents you from closing your mouth needs prompt attention. Mention any recent injury, dental work or change in stress levels.
Assessment
The dentist gently feels the jaw joints and chewing muscles for tenderness, listens for clicking and measures how far you can open. Your bite and tooth wear are checked for signs of grinding. Imaging may be recommended in some cases. The dentist will also consider whether symptoms could come from teeth, sinuses or other causes.
Clenching, grinding, gum chewing, nail biting, poor posture and stress can all strain the jaw. Previous injury or arthritis may also play a role. If sleep problems or snoring are present, they may be connected. Understanding these factors helps shape a plan that addresses the cause, not just the symptoms.
Conservative care
Eating softer foods, avoiding wide yawning and gum chewing, applying warm or cold compresses and gentle jaw exercises may help. Becoming aware of daytime clenching and keeping your teeth slightly apart can reduce strain. Stress management and sleep habits may also make a difference. The dentist will suggest steps suited to your situation.
A custom splint or night guard may be recommended to reduce strain from clenching and grinding during sleep. It is designed to support the jaw in a comfortable position. The dentist will explain how to wear it and monitor its effect. Some people benefit from physiotherapy or referral to another specialist.
Ongoing management
Keep a simple record of symptoms and what seems to help or worsen them. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to check progress and adjust the plan or splint. Many people find symptoms improve over weeks to months with consistent self-care. Be patient and report any changes.
If pain is severe, symptoms worsen despite conservative care, or the jaw locks, further evaluation may be needed. The dentist may refer you to a physician, physiotherapist or specialist. Avoid irreversible treatments without a clear diagnosis. Seasonal residents should share their plan with their regular dentist for continuity.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and often not serious. If it is painful or your jaw catches or locks, have it assessed.
Stress often leads to clenching and muscle tension, which can contribute to jaw discomfort. Managing stress may help reduce symptoms.
A guard or splint can help some people by reducing strain from grinding. It is often one part of a broader self-care plan.
Most TMJ issues improve with conservative care. Surgery is rarely needed and is considered only after other options have been tried.
Stay calm and avoid forcing it. Contact the office promptly. If you cannot close your mouth or have severe pain, seek urgent care.
