Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for TownsendEasing jaw discomfort
The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull and allow you to talk, chew and yawn. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause jaw pain, clicking, popping, limited opening, headaches or earaches. Causes include grinding, clenching, injury, arthritis and stress, and symptoms often come and go.
If you are in Townsend and dealing with jaw discomfort, our Port Dover office can help assess what might be contributing. The dentist will examine the joints, muscles and bite, ask about habits and symptoms, and explain conservative approaches that may help, along with when a referral might be useful.

Recognize symptoms
Pain just in front of the ears, along the jawline or in the cheeks, clicking or popping when you open, a jaw that catches or briefly locks, trouble opening wide enough to bite an apple and aching after chewing are common signs. Clicking on its own, without pain or restricted movement, is very common and does not always need treatment, though it is worth mentioning.
Headaches around the temples, earaches without an ear infection, a feeling of fullness or ringing in the ears, neck and shoulder tension and sensitive teeth can all accompany jaw problems. Symptoms are often worse on waking if you grind or clench at night, or toward the end of the day if you tend to clench while working, driving or concentrating.
The assessment
The dentist will feel the jaw joints and chewing muscles for tenderness, listen for clicking, measure how wide you can comfortably open and watch the path your jaw takes as it moves. They will look at your teeth for wear that suggests grinding and check how your bite comes together. X-rays or other imaging may be suggested in some cases.
You will be asked about stress, sleep quality, grinding, gum chewing, posture at work and any past injury or arthritis. Identifying these contributing factors helps shape a plan that fits your situation. Some jaw problems are tied to broader health issues, so the dentist may suggest seeing your family doctor, a physiotherapist or another specialist as well.
Treatment options
Eating softer foods for a while, cutting food into smaller pieces, avoiding gum and very wide yawns, applying warm or cold compresses and doing gentle jaw stretches can all ease symptoms. Noticing daytime clenching and letting the teeth rest slightly apart, with the lips closed, often helps too. Over-the-counter pain relief may be suitable for short periods.
A custom night guard or splint may reduce grinding forces and give the jaw muscles a chance to relax overnight. Physiotherapy, massage or referral to a specialist may be recommended for problems that persist. The dentist will explain the benefits and limits of each option and will avoid irreversible changes to your teeth or bite unless they are clearly needed.
Long-term management
Keeping a simple diary of when symptoms appear, how strong they are and what seems to help can be surprisingly useful. It helps you and the dentist spot patterns, such as flare-ups during busy weeks, and judge whether treatment is working. Bring any appliance you use to checkups, so its fit and wear can be checked at the same time.
Contact the office or your doctor promptly if your jaw locks open or closed, pain becomes severe, eating becomes difficult or symptoms began after a fall or blow to the face. Persistent problems may benefit from specialist assessment. Most people, however, find their symptoms ease considerably with patient, conservative care over a period of weeks or months.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 and describe your jaw symptoms, including pain, clicking or difficulty opening. The team can arrange an exam to assess the joints, muscles and bite.
Bring any night guard you currently use, note when symptoms are worst and mention any history of jaw injury or arthritis to the dentist.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and often does not need treatment. If clicking comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening your mouth fully, have it assessed by the dentist so the cause can be looked into properly.
A custom night guard or splint may reduce grinding forces and help the jaw muscles relax, which eases symptoms for some people. It is not a cure for every jaw problem, and the dentist will explain what you can realistically expect from one.
Stress can lead to clenching and grinding, which may contribute to jaw pain. Managing stress, improving sleep and becoming aware of daytime clenching can all help reduce symptoms alongside any dental treatment the dentist recommends.
Most jaw problems improve with conservative care such as self-care, appliances and physiotherapy. Surgery is rarely needed and is considered only for specific conditions after a specialist assessment, not as a first step.
Stay calm and do not force your jaw. Gentle warmth on the muscles may help them relax. Contact the office or seek medical care if your jaw stays locked, particularly if you cannot open or close your mouth at all.
Grinding or clenching can wear teeth and tire the jaw. Townsend patients can have signs of bruxism assessed in Port Dover and discuss practical protection.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to protect teeth from grinding. Townsend patients can learn how fitting works and how to care for the guard.
