Caring for St. Williams patients at our office in Port Dover
Every dental service for St. WilliamsEasing jaw discomfort
The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow you to talk, chew and yawn. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles, often called TMD, can cause jaw pain, clicking, limited opening, headaches and earaches. Causes include clenching, grinding, injury, arthritis and stress, and symptoms often come and go.
If jaw discomfort is affecting your daily life, St. Williams residents can have an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your jaw and bite, discuss likely contributing factors and suggest conservative steps first, with referral if specialized care is needed.

Symptoms
Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint or muscles, clicking or popping when opening or closing, difficulty opening wide, a jaw that locks or catches and pain when chewing are common signs. Symptoms may be worse in the morning or after long periods of talking or chewing.
Headaches, especially around the temples, earaches without infection, neck and shoulder tension and a feeling that your bite has changed can also be associated with TMD. Note when symptoms occur and what makes them better or worse to share at your appointment.
Assessment
The dentist checks how your jaw opens and closes, listens for joint sounds, feels the muscles of the jaw and neck for tenderness and examines your teeth for signs of grinding. X-rays or other imaging may be recommended in some cases to look at the joint structures.
Clenching, grinding, stress, poor posture, previous jaw injury and arthritis can all contribute to TMD. Sleep quality and certain habits, like chewing gum frequently, may play a role. Understanding these factors helps the dentist suggest strategies that address the likely causes.
Treatment
Soft foods, avoiding wide yawning and gum chewing, applying warm or cold compresses, gentle jaw exercises and stress management can help many people. Over-the-counter pain relief may be used as directed. Becoming aware of daytime clenching and relaxing the jaw can also reduce strain.
A night guard or stabilization splint may be recommended to reduce strain from grinding and clenching. Physiotherapy may help some people. If symptoms are severe, persistent or involve joint damage, referral to a specialist may be appropriate. The dentist will explain the options.
Long-term care
Keep your teeth apart and jaw relaxed when not eating. Maintain good posture, especially when using screens. Practise relaxation techniques if stress is a trigger. Wear any appliance as instructed and bring it to checkups so the fit can be reviewed.
TMD symptoms often fluctuate. Keep a simple diary of flare-ups and possible triggers. Report worsening pain, locking or new symptoms. Regular follow-up allows the dentist to adjust the plan and consider referral if conservative measures are not helping.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a TMJ assessment. Mention clicking, locking, headaches or difficulty opening so the team can plan an appropriate appointment.
If you already use a night guard or splint, bring it with you, along with any notes from physiotherapists or physicians you have seen.

Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and may not need treatment. If it comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening, an assessment is recommended.
Many cases improve with time and simple self-care. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed to identify contributing factors and appropriate treatment.
A night guard or splint may help if grinding or clenching contributes to your symptoms. It is one part of a broader management plan.
A dentist is a good place to start for jaw pain linked to teeth or bite. The dentist may refer you to a physician or specialist if needed.
Stress can increase clenching and muscle tension, which may worsen TMD symptoms. Relaxation techniques and stress management can help.
Worn edges, sore jaw muscles or morning headaches can follow clenching. St. Williams patients can explore causes and protective options with our Port Dover team.
A custom night guard is shaped to your teeth to cushion grinding forces while you sleep. Find out how St. Williams patients are fitted at our Port Dover office.
