Easing strain on the jaw

Jaw pain has many causes, and care begins with understanding yours.

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping, difficulty opening wide, headaches and earaches. Grinding, clenching, injury, arthritis and stress are among the many possible contributors, and symptoms often come and go.

Silver Hill patients with jaw discomfort can have an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your jaw joints, muscles and bite, ask about your symptoms and habits, and explain conservative treatment options. When needed, coordination with your physician, a physiotherapist or a specialist may be recommended.

Recognizing symptoms

TMJ disorders can show up in different ways.

  • Common jaw symptoms

Pain or tenderness in the jaw, especially when chewing, talking or yawning, is a common symptom. Clicking, popping or grating sounds may occur when opening or closing. Some people experience a jaw that feels stuck or locks open or closed, or find that their teeth suddenly do not seem to fit together properly.

  • Related pain elsewhere

Headaches around the temples, earaches, ringing in the ears, neck and shoulder pain, and facial muscle fatigue can also be related to jaw problems. Because these symptoms overlap with other conditions, it is worth mentioning them to both your dentist and physician so the cause can be properly investigated.

Assessment

A careful examination helps pinpoint what is going on.

Examining the jaw and muscles

The dentist checks how wide you can open, listens for joint sounds, feels the jaw muscles for tenderness and examines your bite and teeth for signs of grinding or clenching. You will be asked about when symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, and any history of injury, arthritis or stress.

Imaging and referral

X-rays or other imaging may be suggested to look at the joints and surrounding structures. If symptoms are complex, persistent or suggest another condition, the dentist may recommend referral to a physician, physiotherapist or specialist. Many jaw problems improve with conservative care, so referral is not always necessary.

Conservative care

Most TMJ treatment starts with simple, reversible steps.

Self-care strategies

Eating softer foods, avoiding gum and very chewy foods, not opening wide when yawning, applying warm or cool compresses and gentle jaw exercises can help ease symptoms. Stress management, good posture and avoiding habits like resting your chin on your hand may also make a difference. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you.

Appliances and other therapies

A custom night guard or splint may reduce strain from grinding and clenching. Physiotherapy, massage or other therapies can help relax tight muscles. The dentist will explain which approaches may suit you. Irreversible treatments, such as permanently changing the bite, are generally avoided unless clearly indicated.

Long-term management

Jaw problems often improve with patience and consistent care.

  1. Tracking symptoms over time

Keep a simple diary of when symptoms occur, what you were doing and how severe they were. This can reveal triggers like stress, certain foods or long periods of concentration. Bring the diary to follow-up visits, so the dentist can see whether treatment is helping and adjust the plan accordingly.

  2. Knowing when to seek more help

Seek prompt care if your jaw locks, you cannot open or close your mouth properly, pain becomes severe, or you notice swelling or numbness. These may need further assessment. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor your jaw and teeth and make changes to your treatment as needed.

Planning your appointment

Booking a jaw assessment

When contacting our Port Dover office from Silver Hill, mention jaw pain, clicking or locking so enough time is set aside for a thorough jaw and bite examination at your first visit.

Bring any previous night guards, imaging reports or notes from other providers. A symptom diary, if you have kept one, is also useful.

TMJ questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is jaw clicking always a problem?

Not necessarily. Many people have painless jaw clicking that does not need treatment. If clicking is accompanied by pain, locking or difficulty opening, it is worth having it assessed by the dentist to see whether care is needed.

Can a night guard help TMJ pain?

A custom night guard or splint can help some people by reducing strain from grinding and clenching. It is one of several conservative options. The dentist will assess whether it is suitable for your symptoms and adjust it as needed.

Will I need surgery for TMJ problems?

Most TMJ disorders improve with conservative care, such as self-care, appliances and physiotherapy. Surgery is rarely needed and is considered only for specific conditions after other treatments have been tried. A specialist would be involved in that decision.

Is stress related to jaw pain?

Stress can lead to clenching and muscle tension, which may contribute to jaw pain. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise or counselling may help. The dentist can suggest strategies alongside other treatments.

Should I see a dentist or a doctor for jaw pain?

Either can be a good starting point. A dentist can assess the jaw joints, muscles and bite, while a physician can evaluate other possible causes. Sometimes both are involved, especially when symptoms are complex or persistent.
