Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office

The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles, often called TMD, can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping, limited opening, headaches and earaches. Clenching, grinding, stress, injury and arthritis are common contributors, and symptoms often come and go.
If jaw discomfort is affecting eating, talking or sleep, the dentist at our Port Dover office can examine the joints, muscles and bite. Renton patients will receive an explanation of what seems to be contributing and practical steps to ease symptoms, along with advice on when another health professional may be helpful.

Recognizing TMD
Aching around the jaw, temples or ears, clicking or grating noises when opening, difficulty opening wide, a jaw that catches or locks and pain when chewing are typical. Some people experience headaches, neck tension or a feeling that the bite has changed. Symptoms may be worse in the morning or after stressful days at work.
Clenching and grinding, stress, poor posture, jaw injuries, arthritis and habits such as gum chewing or nail biting can contribute. Sometimes there is no clear cause. Keeping a diary of when symptoms occur and what you were doing can help identify patterns and triggers worth addressing. Bring the notes to your appointment for review together.
Assessment
The dentist checks how far and how smoothly your mouth opens, listens for clicking, feels the jaw muscles and joints for tenderness and examines your bite and teeth for signs of grinding. You will be asked about your symptoms, their duration and what makes them better or worse. X-rays may be suggested in some cases.
Toothaches, sinus problems, ear conditions and nerve issues can mimic jaw pain. The dentist will consider these possibilities and may suggest seeing your physician or another specialist if something outside the jaw seems more likely. Accurate diagnosis helps avoid treatments that do not address the true source of discomfort. Share any earlier assessments you have had.
Conservative care
Eating softer foods, avoiding wide yawning and gum chewing, applying moist heat or cold packs and practicing gentle jaw relaxation can ease symptoms. Keeping teeth slightly apart when not eating helps reduce clenching. Stress management and attention to posture may also help. Over-the-counter pain relief, used as directed, may ease flare-ups when they happen. Ask first.
A custom oral appliance, such as a stabilization splint, may be recommended to reduce strain on the joints and muscles, especially if you clench or grind at night. The dentist will explain how it works and how to wear it. Appliances are adjusted over time to improve comfort and effectiveness. Bring it to each visit.
Ongoing management
Follow-up visits allow the dentist to check how symptoms are responding and adjust any appliance. Many people improve within weeks or months with conservative care. If symptoms flare again, returning to self-care strategies often helps. Let the dentist know if pain increases, your bite changes or new symptoms appear. Locking of the jaw deserves a prompt call.
Physiotherapy, massage therapy or counselling for stress may be helpful alongside dental care. In persistent or complex cases, referral to a specialist may be discussed. Irreversible treatments such as bite adjustments or surgery are rarely the first step. Renton patients can plan follow-ups with routine dental visits. That keeps monitoring simple and regular over time.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 to arrange a jaw assessment. Describe your symptoms, when they began and whether you grind or clench, so enough time can be set aside.
Bring a symptom diary if you have kept one, along with any night guard you currently use and a list of medications.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Clicking without pain is common and often does not worsen. If clicking is accompanied by pain, locking or difficulty opening, have it assessed. The dentist can explain what the clicking may mean and whether treatment is advisable.
A custom splint may reduce strain on the jaw joints and muscles, especially for people who clench or grind. Results vary. The dentist will assess whether an appliance is likely to help and adjust it as needed.
Surgery is rarely needed. Most jaw problems respond to conservative care such as self-care strategies, appliances and physiotherapy. Surgery may be considered only for specific, persistent problems after other options have been tried first. Referral would be explained.
Stress can lead to clenching and muscle tension, which may contribute to jaw pain. Managing stress, practicing relaxation and avoiding clenching habits can help. The dentist may suggest other support if stress seems to be a major factor.
Physiotherapy can help some people with jaw problems by improving movement and reducing muscle tension. The dentist can discuss whether physiotherapy might complement dental care in your situation. Coordinated advice from both can be especially helpful when symptoms persist.
Waking with a sore jaw or noticing flattened teeth? Renton patients can have clenching and grinding assessed and discuss protection at our Port Dover office.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to cushion grinding forces. Renton patients can learn about fittings, comfort and care at our Port Dover office.
