Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseUnderstanding jaw discomfort
The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause pain, clicking, popping, locking, headaches and difficulty chewing. These conditions, often grouped as TMD, can be influenced by grinding, clenching, injury, arthritis, stress and posture.
If jaw discomfort is affecting daily life in Port Ryerse, our Port Dover office can assess the joints, muscles and bite. The dentist will discuss conservative management first and explain when another health professional, such as a physiotherapist or physician, might be helpful.

Recognizing TMD
Clicking, popping or grating sounds when opening or closing, pain in front of the ear, the jaw catching or locking and difficulty opening wide are common joint-related signs. Clicking alone without pain is common and may not need treatment, but it is worth mentioning.
Tired or sore jaw muscles, especially in the morning, headaches around the temples, earaches without infection, neck or shoulder tension and pain when chewing may relate to muscle involvement. Note when symptoms occur and what seems to trigger or relieve them.
Assessment
The dentist observes how your jaw opens and closes, listens for joint sounds, measures range of movement and gently feels the muscles of the face and neck for tenderness. Your bite and teeth are checked for wear or other signs of grinding. Imaging may be recommended in some cases.
Discuss grinding, clenching, stress, sleep, posture, previous injuries and conditions such as arthritis. These factors can contribute to symptoms. Sometimes jaw pain is related to dental problems, sinus issues or other conditions, so the dentist will consider a range of possible causes.
Management
Eating softer foods, avoiding gum and wide yawning, applying heat or cold, gentle jaw exercises and relaxation techniques can ease symptoms. Being aware of daytime clenching and keeping teeth apart when not chewing helps. Over-the-counter pain relief may be suggested if appropriate for you.
A custom oral appliance may be recommended to reduce strain on joints and muscles, particularly if grinding contributes. Physiotherapy, medical evaluation or specialist referral may help for persistent or complex cases. Irreversible treatments are generally not first-line options.
Ongoing care
Keep a simple diary of symptoms, triggers and what helps. Bring it to follow-up visits so the dentist can see patterns and adjust the plan. Many people improve over weeks to months with conservative care. Patience and consistency matter.
Contact the office or your physician promptly if your jaw locks open or closed, pain becomes severe, you notice swelling or your bite changes suddenly. These signs may need more urgent attention. Let the team know if symptoms worsen despite following the plan.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe your jaw symptoms when booking. The team will allow time for a focused assessment of joints, muscles and bite.
A symptom diary noting pain levels, triggers and times of day can make the assessment more productive.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and may not need treatment. If clicking comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening, it should be assessed.
For some people, especially those who grind or clench, an appliance can reduce strain on the joints and muscles. Suitability depends on the cause of symptoms.
Many cases improve with time and conservative care. Some people have recurring symptoms. A management plan can help control flare-ups.
Surgery is rarely needed and usually only considered after conservative treatments have been tried. Most people are managed with self-care, appliances and therapy.
Stress can increase clenching and muscle tension, contributing to jaw pain. Managing stress, along with other strategies, may help reduce symptoms.
Waking with a tired jaw or flattened teeth may point to bruxism. Port Ryerse residents can explore causes, protection and follow-up at our Port Dover office.
A custom night guard is made to your bite to protect teeth from grinding. Learn how Port Ryerse patients are fitted and how guards are maintained in Port Dover.
