The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to the skull just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles, often called TMJ or TMD, can cause jaw pain, clicking, locking, headaches and difficulty chewing. Causes include clenching, grinding, stress, injury and arthritis. Many cases improve with simple, conservative treatment.
Pine Grove patients with jaw discomfort can have it assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the joints and muscles, ask about your symptoms and discuss a plan, which may involve coordination with other health professionals.

Symptoms
Pain or tenderness in the jaw, face or around the ear, clicking or popping when opening, a jaw that locks or catches, difficulty opening wide and pain when chewing are common. Symptoms may be worse in the morning if you clench at night, or later in the day after talking or chewing.
Headaches around the temples, earaches without infection, neck and shoulder tension, and a feeling that your bite has changed can also be linked to jaw problems. Some people notice ringing in the ears. Because these symptoms overlap with other conditions, a careful assessment is important.
Assessment
The dentist will feel the jaw joints and muscles for tenderness, measure how wide you can open, listen for clicking and check how your teeth meet. X-rays or other imaging may be recommended in some cases. Your description of when symptoms occur and what makes them better or worse is very helpful.
Clenching, grinding, stress, poor posture, gum chewing, nail biting and past jaw injuries can contribute. Arthritis may affect the joints. The dentist may ask about sleep, since grinding and sleep problems can be linked. Identifying contributors helps target treatment at the root of the problem.
Treatment
Eating softer foods, avoiding wide yawning and gum chewing, applying warm or cold compresses and practising gentle jaw relaxation can ease symptoms. Rest your jaw with lips together, teeth apart and tongue resting gently. Stress management and over-the-counter pain relief, if safe for you, may also help.
A custom oral appliance, worn at night, may reduce strain from clenching and grinding. Physiotherapy, massage or exercises suggested by a health professional can help muscles relax. In some cases, referral to a physician or specialist may be recommended. The dentist will explain what each option aims to achieve.
Long-term care
Keep track of symptoms and what seems to help or worsen them. Bring your appliance to checkups so its fit can be reviewed. The dentist may adjust the plan based on your progress. Many people find symptoms improve over weeks to months with consistent self-care and protective measures.
If pain becomes severe, your jaw locks open or closed, or symptoms do not improve with conservative care, contact the office. Further assessment or referral may be needed. Avoid irreversible treatments, such as major bite adjustments, without a clear diagnosis and thorough discussion of the reasons.
Planning your appointment
Book an appointment at our Port Dover office and describe your jaw symptoms. The dentist will examine your joints and muscles and talk about suitable next steps.
Note when pain occurs, what triggers it and anything that helps. Mention grinding, injuries or headaches, and bring any appliance you use.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many cases improve with time and conservative care such as rest, soft foods and stress management. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a dentist or physician.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and often does not need treatment. If clicking comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening, have it assessed.
A custom oral appliance can reduce strain from clenching and grinding, which may ease symptoms for some people. The dentist will explain whether one is likely to help you.
Either can be a good starting point. Dentists assess the jaw, teeth and bite. Physicians or physiotherapists may also be involved. Coordination between providers is often helpful.
Stress can lead to clenching and muscle tension, which may contribute to jaw pain. Stress management, relaxation techniques and awareness of clenching habits can help reduce symptoms.
Waking with sore jaws or worn teeth? Pine Grove residents can learn how bruxism is assessed and managed, from night guards to habit changes, in Port Dover.
A custom night guard is shaped to your teeth to cushion clenching and grinding. Pine Grove patients can see how fitting, wear and guard care usually work.
