The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, allowing you to talk, chew and yawn. Problems with these joints and the surrounding muscles, often called TMJ disorders, can cause jaw pain, clicking, locking, headaches and earaches. Causes include muscle tension, clenching, grinding, joint wear and injury, and symptoms often vary over time.
Peacock Point residents and seasonal visitors with jaw discomfort can have it assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the joints and muscles and discuss conservative approaches that may help ease symptoms.

Symptoms
Pain in the jaw, face, temples or around the ear is common. You may hear clicking or popping when opening, feel the jaw catch or lock, or have difficulty opening wide. Headaches, neck pain and tired jaw muscles can also occur. Some people notice their bite feels different from day to day.
Keep a note of when symptoms are worse, such as in the morning, after chewing or during stressful periods. Note any habits like clenching while concentrating, chewing gum or nail biting. These patterns help the dentist understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.
Assessment
The dentist feels the jaw joints and muscles for tenderness, listens for sounds and measures how wide you can open. Your bite and teeth are examined for signs of grinding or uneven contact. X-rays or other imaging may be recommended in some cases to look at the joint structures.
Stress, poor sleep, posture, grinding, past injuries and arthritis can all contribute. The dentist will ask about your health and routines. Because TMJ problems can overlap with other conditions, referral to a physician, physiotherapist or specialist may be suggested if needed.
Treatment
Eating softer foods, avoiding gum and wide yawning, applying warm or cold compresses and gentle jaw stretches can ease symptoms. Being aware of clenching and resting the jaw with teeth apart helps. Stress management and good sleep habits may also reduce muscle tension.
A custom oral appliance may be recommended to reduce clenching or grinding forces and relax jaw muscles. Physiotherapy, medications recommended by a physician and bite adjustments in specific cases may be part of the plan. Irreversible treatments are generally reserved for cases that do not respond to conservative care.
Ongoing care
Follow the self-care and appliance instructions provided. Improvement may take weeks. Keep a symptom diary to track progress. Bring any appliance to follow-up visits so its fit and effect can be checked. Let the dentist know if symptoms change or new ones develop.
Contact the office if your jaw locks open or closed, pain becomes severe or you notice sudden changes in your bite. These may need prompt assessment. If symptoms return after a period of relief, revisit the self-care strategies and arrange a review.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a TMJ assessment. Describe your jaw symptoms, how long they have lasted and anything that seems to make them better or worse.
Bring any night guard you use and notes on your symptoms, along with a list of medications and health conditions.

Common causes include muscle tension, clenching, grinding, joint wear, arthritis and injury. Stress and poor sleep can contribute. Often several factors combine. The dentist will assess what may be involved in your case.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and may not need treatment. If clicking comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening, have it assessed by the dentist.
A custom appliance may help some people by reducing clenching forces and relaxing muscles. It is often part of a broader plan that includes self-care and addressing contributing factors.
Many TMJ symptoms improve with time and conservative care. Some people have recurring episodes. Ongoing self-care and monitoring can help manage symptoms over the long term.
Surgery is rarely needed. Most people improve with conservative treatment such as self-care, appliances and physiotherapy. Surgical options are generally considered only when other approaches have not helped.
Worn edges, sore jaw muscles or morning headaches may point to bruxism. Peacock Point patients can discuss grinding and clenching at our Port Dover dental office.
A guard made from your own impressions can help protect teeth from nighttime grinding. Peacock Point patients can ask about fittings at our Port Dover dental office.
