Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsEasing jaw discomfort
The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, ear discomfort, limited opening or a feeling that the jaw locks. Contributing factors can include clenching, grinding, stress, injury, arthritis or bite changes.
Lynedoch patients experiencing jaw discomfort can arrange an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the joints, muscles and bite, discuss possible causes and explain conservative approaches that may help, along with when referral to another provider might be appropriate.

Symptoms
Aching in the jaw, cheeks or in front of the ears, clicking or grating sounds when opening, difficulty opening wide and a jaw that catches or locks are common symptoms. Pain may be worse when chewing, yawning or in the morning. Note when symptoms occur and what makes them better or worse.
Headaches, especially around the temples, earaches without infection, neck and shoulder tension and tooth sensitivity can accompany TMJ problems. Some people notice their bite feels different. Share all related symptoms with the dentist, as they help build a fuller picture of what is happening.
Assessment
The dentist checks how far you can open, listens for joint sounds and gently feels the jaw muscles and joints for tenderness. Your bite and tooth wear are examined for signs of grinding. X-rays or other imaging may be recommended in some cases to look at the joint structures.
Stress, posture, sleep quality, previous injuries and conditions such as arthritis may contribute to jaw problems. The dentist will ask about these factors. Sometimes symptoms that seem jaw-related come from elsewhere, and referral to a physician or other specialist may be suggested.
Conservative care
Eating softer foods, avoiding gum and wide yawning, applying warm or cold compresses and practising gentle jaw relaxation can help. Becoming aware of daytime clenching and keeping teeth apart when not chewing may reduce strain. The dentist can suggest strategies suited to your symptoms.
A custom night guard or splint may help reduce clenching forces and protect teeth. Physiotherapy, stress management or medications recommended by your physician may also be part of care. The dentist will explain the purpose of each approach and how long it may take to notice improvement.
Ongoing management
Keep a note of symptoms and what helps or worsens them. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to see how you are responding and adjust the plan. Many people find symptoms improve over time with consistent self-care and appropriate appliances.
If symptoms persist, worsen or include severe locking, the dentist may recommend referral to a specialist for further evaluation. Irreversible treatments, such as major bite changes, are generally considered only after conservative options have been tried and the cause is clearly understood.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office and describe your jaw symptoms when booking. The team can arrange an assessment and let you know if any records or notes would help.
Keep a short symptom diary for a week or two before your visit, noting pain levels, clicking and triggers.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and may not need treatment. If clicking is accompanied by pain, locking or difficulty opening, have it assessed.
A guard or splint may help some people by reducing clenching forces. It is not a cure for every case. The dentist will explain whether an appliance is likely to help you.
Tension often shows up as daytime clenching or night-time grinding, which tires the jaw muscles and adds to pain. Easing stress may help as part of a wider plan.
Most TMJ problems are managed with conservative care. Surgery is rarely needed and usually considered only after other approaches have been tried. A specialist would be involved.
Avoid chewing gum, very hard or chewy foods, wide yawning and resting your chin on your hand. Gentle care and awareness of clenching can help reduce strain.
Waking with a sore jaw or worn teeth? Lynedoch residents can have grinding and clenching assessed at our Port Dover office and discuss protection and habit changes.
A custom night guard can cushion teeth from overnight clenching. Lynedoch patients can learn about fitting, comfort and care at our Port Dover dental office.
