The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull just in front of the ears. Together with the chewing muscles, they allow you to talk, chew and yawn. Temporomandibular disorders, often called TMJ or TMD, can cause jaw pain, headaches, clicking or popping, ear discomfort, a tired feeling in the face or difficulty opening the mouth fully.
For Langton patients dealing with jaw pain, an assessment at our Port Dover office looks at the joints, muscles, teeth and bite to help identify likely contributors. The dentist will discuss conservative options first and may suggest involving other healthcare providers, such as a physiotherapist or physician, when that would be helpful.

Symptoms
Pain in the jaw joint or the muscles of the cheeks and temples, especially when chewing, is one of the most common symptoms. Clicking, popping or grating sounds when opening and closing are frequent, though sounds without pain often need no treatment. Some people experience headaches, earaches, neck pain or a sensation that their bite feels off.
Seek prompt care if your jaw locks open or closed, you cannot open your mouth enough to eat, pain is severe or worsening, or symptoms follow an injury. Jaw pain with chest pain, shortness of breath or arm pain may signal a heart problem and needs emergency medical attention right away, so call 911 in that situation.
Assessment
The dentist asks about when symptoms started, what makes them better or worse and how they affect daily life. They examine how far and how smoothly your jaw opens, listen for joint sounds and gently feel the muscles for tenderness. Your teeth and bite are checked for wear and signs of grinding. Imaging may be recommended in some cases.
Grinding, clenching, stress, poor sleep, posture, arthritis, previous injuries and habits such as gum chewing or nail biting can all contribute to TMJ problems. Identifying the factors that apply to you helps target treatment more effectively. Often several factors combine, which is why a combination of approaches tends to work best for most patients over time.
Treatment options
Eating softer foods, avoiding wide yawns and gum chewing, applying warm or cold compresses and practising gentle jaw stretches can ease symptoms. Becoming aware of daytime clenching and keeping the teeth slightly apart with the jaw relaxed may help. Stress management, good sleep habits and attention to posture also play important roles in recovery for many people.
A custom oral splint or night guard may be recommended to reduce strain on the joints and muscles during sleep. Physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medications suggested by your physician or other treatments may also help. Irreversible treatments, such as permanently altering the bite, are generally not recommended as a first approach. The dentist will explain the reasoning.
Long-term management
Keep a simple diary of symptoms, triggers and what helps, and bring it to follow-up visits. If you are given a splint, wear it as directed and bring it to appointments so the fit can be adjusted. Many people see gradual improvement over weeks to months, though symptoms may flare during stressful periods or when habits return.
If symptoms do not improve with conservative care, become worse or involve significant joint damage, the dentist may recommend referral to a specialist such as an oral surgeon, physiotherapist or physician with expertise in jaw disorders. Coordinated care from several providers can be helpful for persistent or complex TMJ problems that need more than one approach.
Planning your appointment
Book an appointment at our Port Dover office and describe your jaw symptoms, when they began and what makes them better or worse. The dentist can assess the joint, muscles and bite together.
If you have had previous treatment for jaw pain, bring any splints, imaging or reports so the dentist can review them.

Clicking or popping without pain or limited movement is common and often does not require treatment. If clicking is accompanied by pain, locking or difficulty opening, have it assessed by the dentist so the cause can be identified.
A custom splint or night guard can reduce strain on the jaw joints and muscles for some people, especially those who grind or clench at night. It is often used alongside other self-care measures. The dentist will advise whether it suits you.
Yes. Stress can lead to clenching and grinding, which strain the jaw muscles and joints. Stress management, relaxation techniques and good sleep habits can help reduce symptoms as part of an overall treatment plan for the jaw.
Most people with TMJ problems improve with conservative, non-surgical care. Surgery is considered only in specific cases where joint damage is significant and other treatments have not helped. A specialist would evaluate whether it is appropriate.
It varies. Some episodes settle within weeks, while others come and go over longer periods. Conservative treatment, attention to habits and managing contributing factors often lead to improvement. Follow-up visits help track progress and adjust care.
