Caring for La Salette patients at our Port Dover office

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, allowing you to talk, chew and yawn. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause pain, clicking, popping, headaches and difficulty opening the mouth. These conditions are often called TMD, and many cases improve with conservative management.
If jaw discomfort is affecting you in La Salette, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess the joints, muscles and bite. You will learn what may be contributing and which approaches are worth trying, along with when referral to another provider might help.

Recognizing TMD
Common signs include pain in the jaw joint or muscles, clicking or popping when opening, a feeling that the jaw catches or locks, and difficulty opening wide. Symptoms may be worse in the morning if you clench or grind at night, or after chewing tough foods.
TMD can cause headaches around the temples, ear pain or fullness, and neck or shoulder tension. These symptoms can also come from other conditions, so the dentist may suggest checking with your physician if the cause is unclear.
Assessment
The dentist checks how your jaw opens and closes, listens for joint sounds, feels the muscles for tenderness and examines your bite and teeth for signs of grinding. Imaging may be recommended in some cases to look at the joints more closely.
Clenching, grinding, stress, poor posture, injury and arthritis can all contribute to TMD. Habits like chewing gum frequently or biting nails may worsen symptoms. Understanding your contributing factors helps guide a treatment plan that addresses your situation.
Treatment options
Eating softer foods, avoiding wide yawning and gum chewing, applying warm or cold compresses and practising gentle jaw relaxation can help. Keeping teeth apart and lips together when at rest reduces strain. Stress management may also play a role in reducing symptoms.
A custom oral appliance worn at night may help reduce clenching-related strain. Physiotherapy, jaw exercises and short-term medicines recommended by a physician may also be considered. Irreversible treatments are generally not first-line. The dentist will explain options suited to your symptoms.
Ongoing management
Keep track of your symptoms and what makes them better or worse. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to check progress and adjust any appliance. Many people find symptoms ease over weeks to months with conservative management.
If symptoms persist, worsen or your jaw locks open or closed, contact the office promptly. Referral to a physiotherapist, physician or specialist may be recommended for further evaluation. Sudden jaw locking or severe pain should be assessed without delay.
Planning your appointment
Book an appointment at our Port Dover office and describe your jaw symptoms, how long they have lasted and what makes them worse. Bring any previous imaging.
Keeping a short symptom diary for a week or two beforehand can give the dentist helpful information.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Causes include clenching, grinding, muscle tension, stress, injury and arthritis. Often several factors combine. The dentist will assess your jaw and discuss likely contributors.
For some people, a custom appliance reduces clenching-related strain. It is not right for every case. The dentist will assess whether an appliance is likely to help you.
Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and may not need treatment. If clicking comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening, have it assessed.
Many cases improve with time and conservative care. Self-care measures, stress management and reducing jaw strain can help. Persistent symptoms should be evaluated.
If symptoms do not improve with conservative care, or if you have severe pain or jaw locking, the dentist may recommend referral to a physiotherapist, physician or specialist.
Clenching or grinding wears teeth and tires the jaw. La Salette patients can have signs of bruxism checked in Port Dover and discuss protection options.
A custom night guard can protect teeth from overnight clenching. La Salette patients can see how fit is checked in Port Dover and how to clean and store it.
