Caring for Fishers Glen patients at our Port Dover office
See every service for Fishers GlenRelief for jaw discomfort
The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints or the muscles that move them are known as temporomandibular disorders, often shortened to TMJ or TMD. Symptoms can include jaw pain, clicking or popping, difficulty opening wide, a jaw that locks, headaches, earaches and facial muscle tenderness. Many cases are mild and improve with self-care and simple treatments.
If you are in Fishers Glen and experiencing jaw discomfort, our Port Dover dentist can examine your jaw, muscles and bite, and discuss what may be contributing. Treatment usually starts with conservative measures, and referral to other providers may be suggested when appropriate. Notes on your symptoms help.

Recognizing symptoms
Clicking, popping or grating sounds when you open or close your mouth, pain in front of the ear, a jaw that catches or locks, and difficulty opening fully are common joint-related symptoms. Clicking without pain is common and often not a concern. Note when symptoms occur and whether they are getting better, worse or staying the same.
Tired or aching jaw muscles, tenderness in the cheeks or temples, headaches, ear fullness and neck or shoulder tension can also be linked. Symptoms may be worse in the morning if you clench or grind at night, or later in the day after chewing, talking or stress. These patterns help guide the assessment. Write them down.
Assessment
The dentist will gently feel the jaw joints and muscles for tenderness, listen for joint sounds and measure how far you can open and move your jaw side to side. They will look at your teeth for signs of grinding and check your bite. X-rays or other imaging may be recommended in some cases to look at the joint.
Stress, clenching or grinding, poor posture, injury, arthritis and habits like chewing gum or biting nails can contribute to TMJ problems. The dentist will ask about your history, sleep, stress levels and daily habits. Understanding contributing factors helps shape a plan that addresses more than just the symptoms. Several factors often combine in one person.
Treatment options
Eating softer foods, avoiding wide yawning, gum chewing and nail biting, applying warm or cold compresses and practising gentle jaw relaxation exercises can ease symptoms for many people. Over-the-counter pain relief, used as directed, may help during flare-ups. Managing stress and paying attention to daytime clenching are often helpful too. Patience usually pays off here.
A custom oral appliance worn at night can reduce clenching and grinding forces and may ease muscle strain. For some patients, referral to a physiotherapist, physician or other specialist may be recommended. Irreversible treatments, such as major bite changes, are generally not a first step. The dentist will explain the options and reasoning clearly to you.
Ongoing care
Keep track of your symptoms and what seems to help or make them worse. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to check progress and adjust the plan. If you wear an appliance, bring it to appointments so its fit can be checked. Report any changes in your bite or new symptoms. Progress is often gradual and steady.
Flare-ups can happen during stressful periods or after long dental procedures. Returning to self-care measures early often helps. Let the dental team know about your TMJ history before treatment, so they can provide breaks and support your jaw during longer appointments to reduce strain. A small bite block can sometimes make holding your mouth open easier.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange a TMJ assessment. Describe your symptoms, how long they have been present and what makes them better or worse, so an appropriate appointment can be scheduled.
Bring notes on symptom patterns and any previous treatment or imaging for your jaw, and mention if your jaw has locked open or closed recently.

Clicking without pain or limited movement is common and often not a concern. If clicking is accompanied by pain, locking or difficulty opening, it is worth having it assessed by the dentist. Note when it happens.
Many mild TMJ problems improve with time and simple self-care. Some people have symptoms that come and go. If symptoms are severe, persistent or affecting eating, an assessment can help identify suitable treatment and contributing factors.
A custom appliance can help some people by reducing grinding and clenching forces at night. It is not a cure for all TMJ problems. The dentist will assess whether an appliance is likely to help in your case.
If your jaw locks open or closed, stay calm and avoid forcing it. Call the dental office or seek medical care if it does not release. A locked jaw should be assessed promptly to prevent further problems.
Stress can contribute to clenching and muscle tension, which may worsen TMJ symptoms. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise or other support can help. The dentist may discuss stress as one factor in your care.
Grinding can go unnoticed until your teeth, jaw or sleep show the strain. Fishers Glen patients can have the habit and its triggers assessed in Port Dover.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to shield teeth from overnight grinding. Fishers Glen patients can learn about fitting and upkeep in Port Dover.
