Caring for Boston, Ontario patients at our Port Dover office

The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull just in front of the ears. Problems with these joints or the surrounding muscles can cause pain, clicking, popping, difficulty opening the mouth or a jaw that locks. Headaches, earaches and neck tension may also be involved. Many cases improve with conservative care, but an accurate assessment comes first.
If you live in Boston and have ongoing jaw discomfort, our Port Dover office can assess the joints, muscles and bite. Describe when the pain started, what makes it worse and any history of injury or grinding, so the dentist can plan an appropriate and thorough examination.

Recognising TMJ issues
Pain in the jaw, face or around the ears, clicking or popping when opening, a jaw that feels stuck or locks, difficulty chewing, headaches near the temples and a feeling that your bite has changed are all common. Symptoms may be worse in the morning or after chewing tough foods. Keep a simple note of patterns to share at the appointment.
Grinding or clenching, stress, injury to the jaw, arthritis, poor posture and habits like frequent gum chewing or nail biting can all contribute. Sometimes no single cause is found, and several factors combine. The dentist will ask about these possibilities to build a fuller picture of what may be affecting your jaw before suggesting any treatment.
Assessment
The dentist will feel the jaw joints and chewing muscles for tenderness, listen for clicking, measure how wide you can open and watch how the jaw moves from side to side. Your bite and any tooth wear are checked as well. Other dental problems, such as an infected tooth, can mimic jaw pain, so these are ruled out during the visit.
In some cases, x-rays or other imaging may help assess the joints themselves. If symptoms suggest arthritis, a nerve problem or another medical condition, referral to a physician, physiotherapist or specialist may be recommended. The dentist will explain the reasoning behind any referral and what the next steps would involve for you and your jaw.
Conservative care
Eating softer foods, avoiding wide yawning and gum chewing, applying warm or cold compresses, gentle jaw stretches and stress management can all help. Over-the-counter pain relief may ease discomfort if it is safe for you. Becoming aware of daytime clenching and consciously relaxing the jaw, with lips together and teeth apart, can also make a noticeable difference.
A custom oral appliance, sometimes called a splint or night guard, may be recommended to reduce strain from grinding and clenching during sleep. The dentist will explain the type suggested and how it should feel when worn. Appliances are usually adjusted over several visits based on how your symptoms respond, so keep each follow-up appointment.
Ongoing management
Note how your symptoms change with self-care and any appliance, and report improvements, setbacks or new symptoms at follow-up visits. Many people find their jaw improves gradually over weeks rather than days. Consistency with the recommended measures tends to help far more than occasional effort, so try to build them into your daily routine at home.
If symptoms do not improve, other treatments or referral may be discussed. Irreversible treatments, such as major adjustments to the bite, are generally approached very cautiously. Ask the dentist to explain any recommendation and whether the conservative options have been fully explored first, so you understand why a change in approach is being suggested at that point.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment for jaw pain or clicking. Describe your symptoms, when they started and whether you grind your teeth or have had a jaw injury in the past.
If you have seen a physician or physiotherapist about your jaw, bring any notes or reports with you to the appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Causes include grinding and clenching, stress, injury, arthritis and posture, and sometimes several of these together. In some cases no single cause is identified. The dentist will assess your joints, muscles and habits to understand what may be contributing in your situation.
Clicking without pain is common and does not always need treatment. If it comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening your mouth, have it assessed. The dentist can explain whether monitoring or active treatment is advisable for your particular joint.
A custom appliance may help some people by reducing strain from grinding and clenching at night. It is often used alongside self-care measures such as softer foods and jaw stretches. The dentist will explain whether it suits your symptoms and how to wear it.
Both can help. A dentist can assess the joints, muscles and bite, and rule out dental causes of pain. If symptoms suggest a medical condition such as arthritis, the dentist may recommend seeing your physician or another specialist as well.
Surgery is rarely needed. Most people improve with conservative approaches like self-care, oral appliances and physiotherapy. Surgery is generally considered only after other options have been tried and symptoms remain severe, and usually involves a specialist.
Waking with a tight jaw or worn teeth? Boston patients can have grinding assessed in Port Dover and talk through guards, habits and follow-up.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to shield teeth from grinding. Boston patients can be measured and fitted at our Port Dover office.
