Sucking on a thumb, finger or soother is a natural way for babies and young children to soothe themselves. Most children stop on their own by the preschool years. When the habit continues as adult teeth come in, it can push teeth out of position, affect the bite and change the shape of the palate. Tongue thrusting and nail biting can also affect teeth.
Walsingham families concerned about a child’s oral habit can ask the dentist at our Port Dover office during a checkup. The dentist will look for any effects on teeth and bite, explain whether intervention is needed and suggest supportive strategies that respect your child’s age and feelings.

When to worry
Sucking is common in infants and toddlers and usually does not cause lasting problems if it stops before adult teeth arrive. Many children naturally reduce the habit as they find other ways to self-soothe. Gentle, occasional sucking is less likely to affect teeth than vigorous, frequent sucking.
If your child still sucks their thumb or fingers as adult front teeth start to erupt, or you notice front teeth flaring out, an open bite or a narrow upper jaw, mention it to the dentist. Calluses on the thumb, speech changes and difficulty biting into food can also be signs.
Assessment
The dentist checks how upper and lower teeth meet, whether front teeth are pushed forward or apart and whether the palate is narrowing. They may compare findings with earlier visits. Photos can help track changes. These observations help decide whether to monitor or encourage stopping.
Talk with the dentist about when the habit happens, such as at bedtime, when tired, bored or anxious. Understanding triggers helps choose strategies. If the habit seems linked to stress or other concerns, the dentist may suggest talking with your family doctor.
Helping stop
Praise your child when they are not sucking their thumb, rather than scolding when they are. Reward charts with stickers for habit-free days can motivate some children. Involve your child in the decision to stop, explaining in simple terms how it helps their teeth. Avoid shaming or punishment.
Offer alternatives during trigger times, such as a soft toy or keeping hands busy. Gentle reminders, a bandage on the thumb or a glove at night may help some children remember. If these approaches do not work and teeth are affected, the dentist may discuss a habit appliance or referral.
Other habits
Tongue thrusting, where the tongue pushes against or between the front teeth when swallowing or speaking, can contribute to an open bite. It is sometimes linked to mouth breathing or enlarged tonsils. The dentist may suggest an assessment by a speech-language pathologist or physician.
Biting nails or chewing pencils and other objects can chip teeth and wear enamel. It can also introduce germs. Gentle reminders and offering alternatives such as sugar-free gum for older children may help. Mention these habits at checkups so the dentist can look for wear or damage.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham parents can mention thumb sucking, soother use or other habits when booking a checkup at our Port Dover office, so the dentist can allow time to assess and discuss them.
Note when the habit happens and any strategies you have already tried. Photos of your child’s teeth over time can also be helpful.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many children stop by the preschool years. If the habit continues as adult front teeth come in, it is worth discussing with the dentist.
Soothers can be easier to wean from than thumbs, since they can be taken away. Both can affect teeth if used for long periods. Ask the dentist for advice.
If the habit stops early, some changes may improve naturally. Longer-lasting habits can cause changes that may need orthodontic treatment later.
It is a small device placed in the mouth to discourage sucking. It is usually considered only when other approaches have not worked and teeth are being affected.
It can contribute to bite changes that affect certain sounds. If you notice speech concerns, mention them to the dentist and consider a speech-language assessment.
Should your child’s bite be checked before all adult teeth arrive? Walsingham families can learn what an early orthodontic assessment looks for and when referral may help.
When a child needs a filling or other treatment, understanding helps. Walsingham families can learn how our Port Dover team explains care to kids and how parents can help.
