Fresh start for your teeth

Professional cleanings reach what your toothbrush cannot.

Daily brushing and flossing remove a lot of plaque, but some always remains, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Over time it hardens into tartar, which only professional instruments can remove. A teeth cleaning clears those deposits, polishes away surface stains and gives the hygienist a close look at your gums, which helps catch problems while they are still easy to manage.

Windham Centre patients can book cleanings at our Port Dover office, usually alongside an exam so both happen on the same trip. The hygienist will tailor the visit to your gum health and comfort, and share practical tips for keeping your teeth cleaner until your next appointment.

Before your cleaning

Share what has changed since your last visit.

  • Health updates

Let the team know about new medications, health conditions, pregnancy or surgeries since your last cleaning. Some conditions affect gum health or call for precautions during treatment. If you have a heart condition or joint replacement, mention it in case your physician has given specific instructions. Bring updated insurance information if anything has changed so the visit runs smoothly.

  • Concerns to mention

Mention any sensitivity, bleeding when brushing, sore spots, bad breath or areas that feel rough. If you have a strong gag reflex or find cleanings uncomfortable, tell the hygienist at the start so they can adjust their approach. Small details like these help the hygienist focus on what matters most for you during the appointment.

What happens

A cleaning follows a careful, step-by-step routine.

  1. Checking gums and removing tartar

The hygienist usually begins by checking your gums and may measure the spaces between the teeth and gums to look for signs of gum disease. Then they remove plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline using hand instruments, an ultrasonic scaler or both. You may feel scraping or vibration, but it should not be painful. Speak up if you need a break.

  2. Polishing and flossing

After scaling, the teeth are polished with a gritty paste to remove surface stains and leave them smooth. Flossing clears any remaining debris between teeth. Fluoride may be applied if it would help protect your enamel. The hygienist will point out any areas that need extra attention at home and answer your questions before the dentist completes the exam.

Special situations

Not every cleaning looks exactly the same.

Sensitive teeth and gums

If your teeth or gums are sensitive, the hygienist can use gentler techniques, take breaks or apply a numbing gel to particular areas. Let them know which spots tend to bother you. Desensitising toothpaste used for a few weeks beforehand may also help. The goal is a thorough cleaning that is as comfortable as possible for you.

When a deeper cleaning is needed

If gum pockets are deep or there is heavy tartar below the gumline, a routine cleaning may not be enough. The hygienist and dentist may recommend scaling and root planing, sometimes called deep cleaning, which may need local anaesthetic and more than one visit. They will explain why it is advised and what it involves before booking.

Between visits

Good habits extend the benefits of each cleaning.

Daily routine

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, angling the bristles toward the gumline, and clean between your teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes. Limit sugary snacks and drinks. If you use tobacco, consider quitting, as it stains teeth and harms the gums. Ask the hygienist about tools that suit your teeth, gaps or any dental work you have.

How often to return

Many people return for cleanings about every six months, but some benefit from more frequent visits because of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup or health conditions. The hygienist will recommend an interval based on what they see. Booking your next appointment before you leave makes it easier to keep cleanings regular and fit them around work.

Planning your appointment

Schedule your next cleaning.

Call our Port Dover office to book a cleaning and exam. Windham Centre patients can mention when their last cleaning was and any concerns about sensitivity, bleeding or comfort so the visit can be planned around them.

If several family members need cleanings, ask whether their appointments can be booked back to back on the same day.

Teeth cleaning questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Many people have cleanings every six months, but the right interval depends on your gum health and risk factors. The hygienist may recommend more frequent visits if you have gum disease or tend to build tartar quickly.

Does a cleaning hurt?

Most people find cleanings comfortable, though you may feel pressure, scraping or vibration. If you have sensitive areas, tell the hygienist, who can adjust techniques or use numbing gel to keep you as comfortable as possible.

Why do my gums bleed during a cleaning?

Bleeding often indicates gum inflammation from plaque. With regular cleanings and good home care, bleeding usually lessens. Persistent bleeding may suggest gum disease, which the hygienist and dentist can assess and discuss with you at the visit.

Will a cleaning whiten my teeth?

A cleaning removes surface stains from coffee, tea and tobacco, which can make teeth look brighter. It does not change the natural colour of your teeth. If you want a whiter shade, ask about professional whitening options.

What is the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A routine cleaning removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning treats gum disease by cleaning deeper pockets and smoothing root surfaces, often with local anaesthetic and over more than one visit.
