Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office

Even with careful brushing and flossing, plaque builds up in hard-to-reach areas and hardens into tartar. Tartar irritates the gums and makes it easier for decay to develop. A professional cleaning removes this buildup, polishes away surface stains and gives the hygienist a chance to check your gums and advise on home care.
Turkey Point residents and seasonal visitors can book cleanings at our Port Dover office. If you usually have cleanings elsewhere, mention when your last one was so the team can plan the appropriate appointment.

Before the cleaning
Let the team know about any changes in your health, new medications, pregnancy or recent surgery. Some heart conditions or joint replacements may require precautions; your physician can advise. If you take blood thinners, mention it, as your gums may bleed more easily during the cleaning.
Tell the hygienist about sensitivity, bleeding gums, sore spots or areas where food tends to catch. If cleanings have been uncomfortable in the past, say so. The hygienist can adjust technique, take breaks or discuss numbing gel or other comfort measures for sensitive areas.
During the cleaning
The hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler, hand instruments or both to remove tartar from above and just below the gum line. You may feel vibration, a cool water spray or scraping. Areas with heavy buildup or inflamed gums can feel tender. Raise a hand if you need a pause.
After scaling, teeth are polished to remove surface stain and smooth the enamel. The hygienist flosses between teeth and may apply fluoride. Gum pocket depths are often measured to track gum health. The dentist may complete an exam at the same visit to check for decay and other concerns.
Advice and findings
The hygienist will point out areas where plaque tends to collect and suggest ways to reach them, such as adjusting brush angle or trying interdental brushes. If your gums show signs of inflammation, they may explain how to address it. Ask questions about products or techniques you are unsure about.
Based on your gum health and buildup, the hygienist and dentist will recommend when to return. People prone to tartar or gum disease may benefit from more frequent cleanings. If you are in Turkey Point only part of the year, plan how to keep cleanings regular wherever you spend the rest of it.
Afterward
Some sensitivity or gum tenderness is normal after a cleaning, especially if there was heavy buildup. It usually settles within a day or two. Toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help. If your gums bleed for more than a couple of days or sensitivity persists, contact the office.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily to slow new plaque buildup. Limit sugary snacks and staining drinks like coffee, tea and red wine. Drinking water throughout the day helps, particularly on hot summer days. Regular cleanings keep your mouth healthy between exams.

Many people benefit from regular cleanings at intervals recommended by their dental team. Those with gum disease or heavy buildup may need them more often.
Most cleanings are comfortable. Sensitive areas or inflamed gums may feel tender. Let the hygienist know so they can adjust their technique.
Bleeding often indicates inflammation. Improved home care usually helps. If bleeding is persistent, the hygienist may recommend further gum assessment.
Polishing removes surface stains, which can brighten teeth. It does not change their natural colour. Whitening is a separate treatment.
Often, yes. Ask when booking so the appointments can be coordinated.
