Fresh start for your smile

A professional cleaning reaches what your toothbrush cannot.

Plaque that is not removed hardens into tartar, which cannot be brushed away. Tartar along and below the gumline can irritate gums and lead to gum disease. A professional cleaning removes these deposits, polishes away surface stains and gives the hygienist a chance to check for signs of problems.

Patients from Cultus can book cleanings at our Port Dover office, often combined with a checkup on the same visit. Let us know if you have sensitive teeth or gums, and we will adjust our approach so the cleaning is as comfortable as possible for you.

Why it matters

Cleanings support healthy gums and teeth.

Protecting gum health

Tartar provides a rough surface where bacteria thrive, causing inflammation, bleeding and eventually gum disease. Regular cleanings remove tartar before it causes damage. Healthy gums are important for keeping teeth firmly in place and for overall oral health. Once tartar forms, brushing alone cannot remove it, which is why the hygienist’s instruments are needed to clear it from the tooth surface.

Catching problems early

During a cleaning, the hygienist notices changes such as bleeding, recession, new decay or unusual spots. These observations are shared with the dentist, who can investigate further. Early detection often means simpler treatment. Your hygienist also keeps records of gum measurements over time, so a gradual change that you might never feel can be spotted and discussed before it becomes a bigger concern.

The visit

A cleaning follows a few key steps.

  1. Scaling and polishing

The hygienist uses hand instruments or an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and along the gumline. You may feel scraping, vibration or a cool water spray. Tell the hygienist if any area is sensitive so they can adjust their technique or offer numbing. The pace can be slowed down too.

  2. Flossing and fluoride

After scaling, teeth are polished to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel. The hygienist flosses between teeth and may apply fluoride varnish if recommended. They will review your home care and answer questions about brushing and cleaning between teeth. This is a good moment to ask about any products you have been unsure of, from electric brushes to water flossers.

Comfort

Cleanings can be adapted for comfort.

Managing sensitivity

If your teeth are sensitive to cold or touch, let the hygienist know at the start. Desensitizing products, adjusted water temperature or topical numbing can help. Some people find ultrasonic scaling more comfortable, while others prefer hand instruments. Share your preferences. If a past cleaning was uncomfortable, mention what made it difficult so the hygienist can try a different approach.

When gums are inflamed

Inflamed gums may bleed or feel tender during cleaning. This is often a sign that cleaning is needed rather than something to avoid. If you have significant tartar or deep pockets, the hygienist may recommend a series of visits or deeper cleaning to treat the gums thoroughly. Tenderness usually fades within a day or two.

Between cleanings

Home care extends the benefits of each cleaning.

  • Daily routine

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily and limit sugary snacks and drinks. Ask the hygienist about tools that suit you, such as interdental brushes or electric toothbrushes. Good habits slow tartar buildup and keep gums healthier. Pay particular attention to the inside of the lower front teeth and the back molars, where tartar tends to form fastest.

  • How often to return

Many people benefit from cleanings at regular intervals, but some need more frequent visits due to gum disease, heavy tartar buildup or health conditions. Ask the hygienist and dentist what interval suits you. Booking ahead helps keep your schedule on track. Pairing your cleaning with a checkup on the same day also means one trip instead of two.

Cleaning questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Many people benefit from regular cleanings, but the right interval depends on gum health, tartar buildup and risk factors. The hygienist will recommend a schedule and explain why it suits your mouth and dental history.

Does a cleaning hurt?

Most people find cleanings comfortable. Sensitive areas may feel tender. Tell the hygienist about discomfort so they can adjust or offer numbing. Sensitive teeth can also be protected with a desensitizing product applied beforehand if needed.

Why do my gums bleed during cleanings?

Bleeding often indicates inflammation from plaque or tartar. Regular cleanings and good home care usually reduce bleeding over time. If it continues despite good cleaning, the hygienist may suggest checking for gum disease more closely.

Will a cleaning whiten my teeth?

Polishing removes surface stains, which can brighten your smile. It does not change the natural colour of teeth. Whitening treatments are separate. Many people find a cleaning alone gives them a noticeably fresher look and feel.

Can I have a cleaning if I have not been in years?

Yes. The first cleaning may take longer or require more than one visit. Let the team know when booking so they can plan appropriately. There is no judgment, only a fresh start for your teeth and gums.
