Clean teeth, confident kids

Regular cleanings help children keep their teeth healthy and strong.

Even with good brushing at home, plaque and tartar can build up in places that are hard for small hands to reach. A professional cleaning removes these deposits, polishes the teeth and gives the hygienist a chance to spot early problems. Just as importantly, regular cleanings help children see the dental office as a normal, friendly place rather than somewhere to fear.

Families in Windham Centre can book children’s cleanings at our Port Dover office, often on the same day as an exam. The hygienist will adapt the visit to your child’s age and comfort, explaining each step and offering tips that make brushing at home easier for both of you.

Before the visit

A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Talking about the cleaning

Tell your child that the hygienist will count their teeth, tickle them clean with a special toothbrush and make them shiny. Use calm, positive words and avoid ones that might sound scary. Picture books or short videos about dental visits can help younger children know what to expect. If your child has worries, listen and share them with the team.

  • Practical planning

Book a time when your child is usually rested and fed, and allow enough travel time that you are not rushed. Bring information about any medications, allergies or health conditions. If your child has sensory sensitivities or has had a difficult visit before, mention it when booking so the hygienist can plan a gentle approach that suits them.

During the cleaning

Each step is explained in child-friendly terms.

  1. Removing plaque and polishing

The hygienist gently removes plaque and any tartar using small instruments, then polishes the teeth with a soft spinning brush and flavoured paste. Flossing may follow. Children are encouraged to raise a hand if they need a break. Many enjoy choosing a polish flavour. The whole process is usually quick, especially for younger children with fewer teeth.

  2. Checking and teaching

During the cleaning, the hygienist looks for early signs of decay, gum redness and areas where brushing is being missed. They may apply fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel. Afterward, they can show your child, and you, how to brush and floss those tricky spots more effectively, using a mirror or a model to demonstrate the technique.

Home habits

What happens at home matters most.

Brushing and flossing by age

Young children need help brushing until they can do a thorough job on their own, often around age seven or eight. Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste for toddlers and a pea-sized amount from about age three. Brush twice a day for two minutes. Start flossing once teeth begin to touch, and ask the hygienist which flossing tools are easiest for children.

Snacks and drinks

Frequent snacking and sipping juice or pop throughout the day give cavity-causing bacteria repeated chances to attack enamel. Offer water between meals and save treats for mealtimes. Cheese, vegetables and fruit make good snacks. The hygienist can discuss your child’s typical diet and suggest realistic changes that fit around school, sports and busy family life.

Staying on track

Regular visits keep small problems small.

Setting a cleaning schedule

Many children have cleanings about every six months, though some benefit from more frequent visits because of cavity risk, braces or health conditions. The hygienist and dentist will recommend an interval that suits your child. Booking the next appointment before you leave helps keep visits regular and easier to plan around school calendars and holidays.

Building positive memories

Praise your child after each visit, even if they found parts of it hard. Avoid sugary rewards and choose a sticker, a story or a favourite activity instead. Over time, positive experiences make cleanings feel routine. If your child remains very anxious, talk with the team about other strategies that might help at future appointments.

Planning your appointment

Book your child’s next cleaning.

Call our Port Dover office to schedule a cleaning for your child. Windham Centre parents can ask whether it can be combined with an exam, and whether siblings can be booked during the same visit.

Mention any worries your child has about dental visits, and bring a favourite comfort item if it helps them feel more relaxed.

Kids’ cleaning questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

At what age should my child start having cleanings?

Cleanings can begin once your child is comfortable sitting for a short time, often in the toddler or preschool years. The dentist may start with a quick polish and gradually build up as your child gets used to visits.

Will the cleaning hurt?

Most children find cleanings comfortable. Some feel mild pressure or a tickling sensation. The hygienist explains each step and will take breaks if your child needs them. Let the team know if your child has sensitive teeth.

Can I stay with my child?

Parents are generally welcome to stay, particularly with younger children. Some older children prefer to go in on their own. Ask the team how best to support your child, and follow their lead on where to sit.

Is fluoride varnish necessary?

Fluoride varnish can help strengthen enamel and reduce cavity risk, especially for children at higher risk. The dentist will recommend it based on your child’s needs and explain why it is suggested before it is applied.

What if my child will not open their mouth?

This is common, especially at early visits. The team can take things slowly, use gentle encouragement and try again another time if needed. Even a brief, positive visit helps build familiarity for future appointments at the office.
